Questions for those of you building/that have built cars...

The price doesnt really matter, but when your on a budget it does.Every car i have done has been from the profit of the last one.I just finish it drive it for a summer and sell it and build something better(faster) the next year.I have done that for years,if you look for the deals on ebay and do everything yourself it usually gets you alot futher than paying full price and having somebody do the work for you.My current car 86 t type is the first car i have not doneeverything in 1 winter, last winter i built the drivetrain and this winter i am doing the bodywork.

:word: modding doesnt equal “building”

That last pic is fantastic. Always loved the lines of the Coronets/Bees over the Belvedere/Road Runners.

You still have the '73 E-body? That was a sharp car.

I haven’t “built” a car all the way yet. Currently pulling apart and putting back together an old Mustang.

I guess the only serious cars are as follows:

2000 Chevy S-10
Started at age 17

*Mods
N20
3.42 posi disc brake blazer extreme rear end
lowered 4/4
17" wheels
fiber glass painted to match tonneau cover
painted to match cowl hood
vinyl thug strip
system - (4) 12" subs / pioneer head unit / kicker cab speakers
projector headlights!
Blue neon underbodies/leds/black light interior/blue everything

Probably spent ~$2500 on all that crap…totalled the truck and parted it out.

No roof rack on in this picture…

This is my baby, purchased when I was 19/20 maybe?
How it sits now…

h/c/n20 LS1 (new engine on its way)

No pics… but I got my Neon for free because it had overheated and the head was warped. The previous owner didn’t want anything to do with it.

I just so happened to find a member selling a clean & ported/polished head that I fixed up a little bit and I put a bigger Neon R/T cam in there. The sale also came with a Mopar MLS headgasket so that fixed the top end issue.

The exhaust manifold had a crack so I found an aftermarket header for cheap. It will have a full exhaust this spring, just need to install a downpipe and midsection.

I was mainly looking just to get the car road worthy again but I was able to find performance parts cheaper than OEM and found a mechanic that able to get the work done without charging an arm and a leg and it’s fun to drive.

The only money you can say I “wasted” on parts that did not need to be replaced would be a $200+ dollar Iceman CAI, and a ModernPerformance Under-drive pulley for like $100 but I still have more plans.

For now it’s great for picking on ricers who think they’re Paul Walker.

I forgot about my civic. lol. I also wanted to add that depending how deep you’re getting into a project think about all the specialty tools you’ll need to buy or rent or borrow, I’ve probably got $800 in tools I’ve used once or twice.
93 civic
bought at 20, been a project for 2.5years.

Project #1
1955 Willys CJ5 Jeep
The first vehicle I ever owned. I bought it right after I turned 16 in 1996. It was a rotted out plowtruck. I spent about 8 months doing a frame off resto. Technically it’s still not done since it never will be…but I’ve put about 40,000 miles on it. As far as money spent…tens of thousands of dollars…way more than it’s worth for sure, but it was worth it.
I don’t have a before pic loaded anywhere, but here’s what it looks like now:

Project #2
1949 Chevy 3/4 ton truck
I traded my racecar for the truck and a big wad of cash in late 2004, so I was 24 at the time. Still a work in progress. Most of the really hard work is done, putting paint on it now. I have about $15K into this one so far, but I have 95% of what I need to put it back together. I might break even for once.

Don’t know exactly when it’ll be done, but I keep chipping away on it when time permits

project: Turbo Honda Civic. Bare shell build up with a d-series. Nothing nice or special. Mostly just learning experience.

age: 20-22

time: a few years all said and done.

Cost: lets not go there. Lets just say, “a bunch more than I sold it for”

project: 1997 Eagle Talon TSi AWD- motor swap to built 2.4L, built head, upgraded fuel system, exhaust, intake, turbo, ic, suspension, wheels, transmission(s), clutch(es), etc

age: 24-present (had another DSM project before this one that started at 20)

time: current build ongoing but 7 years so far.

cost: $4,000 in transmissions alone over the years, plus everything else, I don’t really want to think about the grand total.
