Race City will CLOSE OCT 2009 unless we act NOW!

Race City facing a move

By SHAWN LOGAN, SUN MEDIA

The finish line is closing in on a local motor speedway and an alderman is asking the city to step up and help find a new track to keep engines revving and tires squealing.

Race City Motorsport Park, at 114 Ave. and 68 St. S.E., will see the lease on its city-owned land expire in 2010 and Ald. Ric McIver wants administration to work with the operators to help acquire a new site.

“I want the city to have a race facility available for tourists and Calgarians alike for years ongoing,” he said, adding the business brings plenty of money into the city from racing enthusiasts.

“The time to start looking for new sites for them is now and I would like administration to look and see if there are any city sites it could go.”

Raising the matter at today’s council meeting, McIver was told city land near the Shepard land fill will be needed for future operations, leaving the privately-run race track in search of a new site for the rubber to hit the road.

Re: Race City Motorsport Park

We are writing in support of your initiative to find a new location for Race
City Motorsport Park.

There is an overwhelming majority of motorsport enthusiasts in this city who
are law abiding responsible citizens who seek to continue enjoying their
sport at a proper facility in a safe and legal manner.

With the recent media attention given to street “racing” and the enactment
of several laws to discourage it, the availability of proper racing
facilities can only make the streets safer for all.

In addition to providing a safe and legal place for people to race, the
industry is a major source of revenue for many businesses operating in
Calgary.

The City of Calgary should make it a priority to see that facilities are
made available for motorsport racing events. These types of events can be a
large source of tourism income as well as another one of the many things
Calgary has to offer to people.

Following is a petition of people who are interested in supporting the
initiative to find a new location for the operation of a racing facility in
Calgary.

Race City has really gone downhill in the last couple of years. It will be bad if Calgary does not get a new track. But if they build a new track any further south I will never go to it or support it.

I look forward to the track in Rimbey being finished since it could be closer. http://www.caraceways.ca/

Thanks for adding that.

Why even say anything if you don’t support Calgary racers, JackAss.

I was just saying i hope they build the new track in a more central location so that everyone can use it and not just the people in the south. Now i really hope they close it down if you are the type of people that support race city!

No, you said you would NOT go to or SUPPORT a CALGARY track if it was any further south.
FYI In Calgary, there is no other place to go. No Strato Park, No Greisbach parade square, no airforce base, no Castrol Raceway.
Excuse me if I seem a little annoyed that some one from Edmonton doesn’t want to support us unless we make it easier for him!

i’m not from edmonton.

Cool the jets.
The oval sucks dick, the facility sucks. Pretty sure there is a homeless family living underneath the stands.

Time for a new facility?

K Bye.

Read much??? Thats what the Petition is about.

I’m all for a new track. even thou the track sucks it’s still beter than nothing. going farther south is better than going all the way to edmonton every friday for a few runs on the strip or some drifting practice.

lol

We’re not talking some kind of regular Canadian town here…

Calgasia’s expansion is just redonkulous. By the time they build a new track, in which no way could it even be close to town, they will probably have built close enough to it that it will have to be shut down anyways due to noise complaints.

Thing that sucks is that all the towns around the Calgary area seem to just grow likes its no ones business. You need something like Castrol or Stratotech… where its far far away from any urban dwellings.

thay should find some space out by the balzac gas plant. thay won’t be bilding any houses out there.

^^Good Call
Ald Ric McIver, who is pushing the city to try to help, has suggested the area out near the new mall / horse race track being built near Balzac would be ideal. Being so close to the airport and right beside a busy highway, noise would be less of a problem, as would the potential for residential expansion.
And another possitive with that location is that ‘imtired’ might even go to it.

Starting to sound like your building Castrol 2.0

thanks. I live in airdrie so I hope thay bild out there.

i was thinking something around the airport would be a good location. But out at the balzac mall would be great.

I wanna drft now :S…

Well I do know the owners of Race City a bit and they are fighting to find a new location or to get funding from the private sector to rebuild.

There’s no way that they’ll build it up by Balzac now, too expensive with the new Mega Mall and horse track. South seems to be the way to go and to keep it in the industrial area. It’s sad because I just started going out to the track too.

Petition is signed and I’ll keep fighting for it!
