So, I was originally thinking that my bank account just wasn’t updating. But, I had spent a good chunk of change this weekend, and the total really wasn’t moving. I looked at my account and on the 5th there is a $1,200 deposit in my account. It says DEPOSIT BRANCH #### NEW YORK…I would have remembered depositing $1,200 in my account and I don’t. I’m guessing they botched the number on some guys paycheck and sent it to the wrong account. Should I call them, Spend it?
call them, there gonna find the mistake when some dude realizes his moneys not in his account and take it out of yours weather you spent it or not lol. or this could be like in eagle eye and your being set up. the FBI will be at your door in 10 seconds
Definitely don’t spend it, lol.
I’d give your bank a call, because somewhere out there someone is calling their bank too…
Call them and get it cleared up. This will get found eventually and you will be responsible for it.
Don’t spend it
I find it interesting that they can charge you with theft. If someone drops $1200 on the side of the road and you keep it are you in the same boat?
I’d probably pull the money out and just keep it in cash until they said something. Cost of doing business, if you screw up you screw up.
The opposite happened to me, teller botched the account number on a $500 withdrawl. PITA because it spooked me into closing the accounts and had to get all new cards and checks.
I’ve been freaking out all day and my bank couldn’t figure it out. Lets save everyone the hassle, I’ll meet up with you and you can just withdrawl the $1200 and give it to me and I’ll put it back in my account where it belongs…no hard feelings bud, I’ll even buy ya a beer!
The finance sector in this country has so much amazing influence and power it is astounding. You are responsible for keeping track of your taxes, income, donations, writeoffs, interests, and reporting according to the tax code.
You also are required to keep your bank account in check as you doing anything can land you in jail. Any other business makes a mistake and you benefit doesn’t get you in trouble as it is their loss and error but when it comes to banks and finance, dear god you are screwed.
sit on it for a year or so… see what happens.
Usually they pull it out immediately
Confirmed accurate.
(side story: I had this happen to me once and didn’t catch it. I was young, highscool young, and it was only $200, which seemed like thousands at the time. I spent it, they pulled it like 2 weeks later, and I was broke as shit for a good couple weeks. The bank merely apologized and that was it.)
it is a little different though because that money belongs to someone else. If the valet brings around the wrong car and I take it for a joy ride until someone discovers the issue…I’m still responsible for my actions. The valet will certainly be on the hook as well, but I don’t get to just do whatever I want with others property/money because I came to possess through the fault of another.
Called the bank and they told me it was basically 3 transactions that totalled $1200. One being a check from someone people with the same last name as me but no relation. They are forwarding it on to their “specialist” and I should hear back in 5-10 business days while they determine if it’s my money. I told them that it wasn’t basically by saying it wasn’t a deposit I made.
it will get reversed for sure especially when there is a check involved. I know it coz i worked as a bank encoder for a while, probably the worst job in the banking industry.
Yeah I figured I’d get fucked one way or another with this. Not overly surprised.
First step is always post on the internet to find out what to do.
Step 2 is withdraw and spend the $
Why not?
