RB20 Transmission Options/Upgrades

I have now destroyed 2 RB20 transmissions within 2 months. I am looking into an upgrade. Possibly a stronger clutch as well. Something that disengages/engages much quicker for me.

Now, I have heard and read so many different stories about RB,VG,SR,KA trannies. I have proved that a KA trans or an SR will not work with an RB20 in an S13 chassis.

Basically I am asking;

What transmission fits my S13 with an RB20 other than the RB20 transmission. Stronger. Good ratios. Keeps my 1-piece aluminum shaft, etc etc.

Or, does any body here know someone that can beef up my RB tranny for a half decent price. (I don’t mean cheap, cause I’m far from that, just don’t want to hear 1,000-1,500)

Any input, suggestions or comments are welcome.

Dude I dont get it! I’ve seen guys in S13’s run 400WHP through those things man. Lasted long time. Are you power shifting or anything

Honestly. I don’t think I drive my car that hard. Yet, everyone tells me to chill the fuck out.

When I smash a gear, I fucking smash a gear. Last tranny was the center shift fork (3/4) snapped in two.

Now, this one…not exactly sure. Think I may of upset a gear set. 1st wobbles and pops out with a sudden blip of the throttle. Shifting, well. It’s not good lol. Still drivable.

I need a tranny that can take an ass whoppin’.

T5. lol. or a Tremec T56. Or figure a way to get a 7MGTE tranny on there.

On SR’s with S13’s you can run a VG Tranny on them, you just need an adaptor plate and drive shaft. I’m not sure about an RB.

I have broken T5’s as well. Older ones I should note.

I’m getting to the point that I almost wanna throw a turbo350 in there. Fuck standard. lol

I’ve been doing some looking. I’m a huge V8 into light import guy and I stumbled on this.

Check this out. I’m gonna do some research, I likey:

Dude, I don’t wanna sound rude, but if you’re smashing that many transmissions I’d look at how you’re driving. You clearly don’t think you’re driving that hard, but you clearly are…

These guys are right, there are a lot of people who drive their cars hard and track the hell out of them who aren’t dropping trannies that quick. I’ve never killed a transmission in my life, and I drive aggressively. When I shift, I shift fast.

Otherwise you might have to look at an aftermarket gearset from OSGiken or Quaiffe or something.

Not rude at all bro. That’s what I am looking for. Input and suggestions. I obviously know the problem is me. Yet, that will never change (driving habbits)

I have no mercy for mechanical things. It’s either it works, or it don’t. If I go to hit a gear. I don’t care what happens that bitch is going in.

Whats the point of being gentle to your car? No fun in that.

This aftermarket shit…complete tranny? or just parts? How comparable? How strong?

Ronnie; Im reading that now.

The aftermarket stuff is a gearset, new guts, so you still use the same casing.

Are you using a short throw? If you’re jamming it hard like that, they’re known for being a bit vague and you may be bashing things into each other as you try to find a gear. Maybe try a stock shifter too, longer throw, but a bit more accurate.

Hey Chris, I know you said cheapish, but try a dog box  might be the only thing that can hold the way you drive.

if you want stronger go RB25 tranny… youll have to get your driveshaft re done or sell it and get a mackinney one but a RB25 tranny is a lot stronger and will bolt right up… I have a rb20 in my can… I drive it hard, still no problems with it… tho I do have a second tranny just in case

Stock RB shifter

Dog box outta what lol.

The problem is I keep breaking shifter forks.

Shorter shaft or longer shaft with the 25?

not sure… its the yoke that goes into the tranny that is different… I think it is a bit shorter as well the shaft that is

if you breaking shifter forks Id say you shoud look at your shifting style… no offence at all but you must be really forcing it to break that off

Dude, the forks are aluminum. What do you expect? lol

Give your car one good hard quick shift…see what happens. I mean, smash it like your life depends on it!

Yes, I am an animal with my cars.

I’m gonna look deeper into the 25 trans. Also just a better set of forks. Or if there is a way to beef them up. I dunno. Sucks, but what can you do.

Shifting style? Who knows. Transmissions hate me

you don need to smash your shifter to get it in gear

Chris lol, how are you managing this. I beat the shit out of my old RB at the track with quick and HARD shift locks…it held up lol.

I dunno man. I dunno.

And yes, I know you do not have to “smash” the shifter to get her in gear. Just stating my enthusiasm.

I’m considering pulling out my shift forks (or good ones) and getting them CNC’d outta something wicked strong.

 by dogbox I mean a sequential tranny. I know PPG makes itThey’re straight cut gears though with no synchros so you need to double clutch on every down shift, but don’t need to clutch in on upshifts. It’s what rally cars and some drift cars use.
