long story short, internal power jack took a dump. guess i need to replace the MB. i only use the computer for school stuff, music, and fuckin around. not a gamer or anything like that. only other issue with the computer is that it overheats quite a bit… it helps when i vacuum out the fan area
so…
please recommend a nice upgrade for me that’s compatible. not looking to spend a lot of money. if you could explain your choice to me (not computer savvy), i’d appreciate it. thanks and anything else i might need while im in there
Replacing a laptop motherboard isn’t a simple task like in a desktop, nor are different ones generally compatible. To fix yours you’d probably have to find the specific parts that were used in that model and because of the low availability the cost probably won’t make it worth it.
In a desktop it’s a whole different story. I picked up a used 2ghz with a gig of ram (more than enough for what little I use my desktop) yesterday for $40 and swapped out the old stuff and had the replacements fully working in about 30 minutes.
If it’s just the power jack that failed you can get that repaired. It’s a pretty common problem for the jack to snap off the main board. Do a search for “laptop power jack repair” on google. Probably have to look into it a bit more to find a place you’d trust.
You’re gonna have to call Toshiba and get the part# for the motherboard and get it ordered. You may luck out and find a toshiba distributor who can get you the parts cheaper than going through toshiba direct. In any event, call them up and ask them how much it’s going to cost as well as the part#
well my dad also has a few computer tech guys at work, including kevin (buickgn). i know they can do the surgery
i also have an even older sony vaio desktop sitting on the back burner that i was thinking of upgrading to all new shit. thats old school though, from back in like 2000-2001. is it worth it to upgrade all that shit or is it more money efficient to just buy new?
like i said, i don’t need pimp computer shit, just something that has the stuff i need for school and is fast. oh, and works and i need it QUICK.
ie, im in BALDY computer lab right now doing stuff i could easily be doing in the comfort of my room
i think i had a 4 year on the laptop from circuit city. i got it when i started college in fall '04. i can’t remember if it was 1,2, or 4 year. i need to go check with them. i just like the feel of laptops better. but no, i don’t need anything spectacular
Exactly. My desktop is used to occasionally surf the web and as a file server and dvd burning station. It was a 1ghz POS with 768meg of ram and that was fine, at least until the processor overheated due to a fan malfunction. $40 later it’s a 2ghz with a gig of ram. I just couldn’t see the point in spending hundreds to do what I know $40 would do.
If you’re not gaming or video editing pretty much any old desktop can do web/email/dvd burning.
They sometimes have a 399 laptop that is more than adequate for most anyone.
Also, in the latest tiger direct catalog, they have the same hp desktop workstations that we use at citi, for $199 with windows xp loaded on them.
On slickdeals, I have seen some really really nice dell laptops with core2duo chips for 500 bucks, and quad core desktops for around 600 with a huge monitor.
Computer stuff is so cheap. Its not even worth buying parts to fix an old one, just ebay it.
