Recommend me a router.

Home use. Nothing fancy. I just want fast wireless porn anywhere on my quarter acre lot and someone to have to guess that my password is my dog’s name if they want to hack my shit.

Keep it under $50. Bonus points if its Prime eligible on Amazon.

linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS about $60 brand new last i check, but WELL worth it.

I’ll check them out. What makes one router better than another? I know there are different standards and speeds b/g/n/q/z but what else? Reliability? Ease of use? Looks like it might start to hover at any second?

linksys

A lot of things could make one better than the other. For the average home user though, reliability and ease of use make them better.

Should I look for 802.11n? I intend to use this thing for years.

Customer choice award on newegg too. Looks like I’ll just get one of these unless someone tells me to get something with an N on the label.

yes, get 802.11n

there’s no reason to get the slower of the 2. it’s obviously backwards compatible so there is no use in skimping out.

the WRT54G(S) is like the go to router and has been for years. I’d agree and go with the “N” standard though. Stay with either Cisco or Linksys (<- Owned by Cisco)

?

I would get the newer E2000

I don’t know if you can get a decent N router for under $50.

I have an e class linksys and so far it’s been great. Of course I’m running DD-WRT (see below) so I have a leg up on the stock firmware.

Maybe this one considering your price. Or move to about $100 and you’ll have a few added options out there.

And don’t forget to flash DD-WRT…

The E1000 is 50 bucks on amazon

comparo chart:

E2000 is one I would look at if the budget grew a lil bit. $50 makes it tough to get gig and dual band etc…
Good call on the E2000 IMO

DD-WRT info for e2000

This works really well for something cheap. It’s wireless n, I have two of them. I know it’s not $50 though. $16 isn’t really that bad.

lol it’s got horrible reviews on amazon

Yeah the budget can grow if there is good reason for it. There just seemed to be a lot of options under $50. Plus the whole thing’s going to be bottlenecked by crappy TWC service. (I can just plug the damn thing in if I want to do big local file transfers.)

Just spend the $7X and get the E2000

It will last a long time and not become obsolete next week

the 54g is nice.

I use to use an old hard line linksys, then i switched tow wireless, bought a shitty belkin, nothing but issue,s returned it like 3 days later got the 54, hasnt dropped once.

I have this one. Don’t know if it is good but it works fine for me. I have no clue wtf this N shit is and you know I don’t use technology unless I have to. I just went to a store and said give me a router I am in a hurry and do not like this stuff. Took it and left.
