I’m going to be replacing a wood double casement window later this week (it’s gonna be a balmy 35! haha). Has anyone pulled one out before? I’m just wondering what to expect. The house was built in '46, and the window is trimmed in (ext) with 1x4 planks. I’m hoping I’ll find a flange like on the new construction windows, but since it’s wood, I’m not sure.
Our crews work year round, no worries. Just prepare well.
From 1946 you won’t have any nailing fin like a modern window, most of them were held in by brick mould trim or flatstock like you have(assuming this window is original to the home).
Last year I had some major ice issues so I’m just getting to it now, hopefully before they can build up again this year. Of course the gutters were plugged last year too, and I’m sure that didn’t help any. I would have done this earlier but I had to replace the front door, and an exterior wall for our breezeway, so extra money didn’t really show up until after christmas.
if you have storm/screens outside your windows its not too bad to do in the winter. I did mine when it was 20+ out, closed the door to the room, and left the storm part in place for now. Once the trim was off, it only took me about 20 minutes per window to get the new one in, sealed, and insulated.
Mine were victorian windows from 1890s so i had counter weights and pulleys to take out as well… Fun times!
