Nice biased poll options Jesse. Anyways Jesse brought up the topic on msn
so I told him to post a poll here. My question is simply will you guys use it?
If you will post reviews on various products we can post this section and
have a template you follow in your review.
Vote yes only if you would be willing to write reviews on any products you
have bought.
I think we should add a section on the website where we can have reviews of various products. Members can submit their reviews and then the Webmaster can edit them and post them up. I think that would keep the crap and rice to a minimum.
This is under the assumption that people give you credit.
No offence but… if I want a review of a product, I dont go looking for the ones written by high school kids… who havent even tested most of the competition. There is no way you could have unbiased opinions. You bought it, so you’re gonna give it good reviews. It’ll either get 80-100% (20% margin for people to pull some insignificant detail out of their ass so that it looks like a real review) or 0%.
Yeah, so what if I’m an asshole? Bottom line… you can’t review products unless you didn’t pay money for them and have most of the competition to compare it to.
Is there any chance of this happening or has it just been ruled out…just curious because I think it could work with a template style setup. I think this could benefit our members.
If you look at the poll results, then you know that it is likely to happen.
Axlerod is saying that if you just spent $800 on a new product, obviously your review of the product will be somewhat biased since most people won’t openly admit that they just wasted their money on something that doesn’t work, but they still have it on their car because they paid so much $$ for it.
Another good point is what they have to compare the product to, almost any performance part will be better than stock if that is what it is being compared to.
Yeah but fom what i got its just a feedback section, letting people express their thoughts on the product they baught, not comparing it to some other product available on the market.
If so then you are correct you cannot compare something if you havent tested the rest.
As for this feedback section! is it really needed? people are just gonna use it to brag about what they baught.
If you want a review from the “pros” just look at the price!! we all know the better the product the more it costs no matter how good of a review the D2 coilovers get, there is better suspension out there.
I think that people could really save time & money by reading other people’s comments about a product they are considering purchasing.
ie.
i’m thinking about buying “Powerslot rotors” for example, but the review:
“…These rotors barely help braking and have already started to warp…” etc
ie.
I want to upgrade clutch, but don’t know which brand would suit my needs…
“…the ACT clutch has a bit stiffer pedal & connects sharply but is very streetable, and held it’s power rating unlike the SPEC clutch I used earlier…”
ie.
Hmm…my engine shakes when starting, not sure what to do, then I see this review:
“…these Nismo engine/tranny mounts costed $270 CDN to my door (half the dealers OEM ones) and after installing, the throttle response & “feel” have greatly improved and my engine shake on startup is eliminated…”
That kinda stuff…just cheezy examples, but i’m trying to get a point across here! If you agree though, post! I for one will contribute reviews for whatever parts I buy. :thumleft:
I understand what you are saying Axlerod, believe me I really do, but just think of how fun it’ll be to flame and erase the couple review posts that stink! j/k We can post a sticky at the top to try and encourage standards when reviewing.
It can’t really be good scientific “review” because in few cases there will be head-to-head comparisons…but I think there is a tonne of value in having a resource where members can actually trust the comments.
I know for myself, I am far more comfortable buying products that can be endorsed by locals. Also – if this resource took into account the price people paid and the place they made the purchase… all members would be happy knowing they have a good product at a good price from a trustworthy source.
For example, due to the relatively strong Canadian dollar I’ve recently just purchased a B&M shifter for $179us shipped and a ACT HDSS Clutch kit for $378us shipped…I did some research and am fairly happy with those prices. Barring disaster…I would gladly endorse the places I made my purchase and pass on any information I could. I’m certainly not attempting to brag…but somebody interested in these parts could definately benefit from the knowledge I have.
I’m glad you mentioned short shifters, as I’d LOVE a comparison of how well they feel, perform, how durable they are, etc. It’s one of the first things on my list and I honestly have no clue which one to go with. I’ve heard of the Megan, OBX, B&M (i think that’s all lol) and no clue which one’s the best.
there isnt anything wrong with a reviews section, just be warned that like any kind of advertising or so-called “unbaised testing” you will always have to consider the source…
using the D2’s as an example
i like them but you have to consider:
i havent had coilovers before, just AGX’s and springs
i sell D2’s
i know for a fact that phantomslider didnt like his D2’s and i know of others that dont love them
take all the sources into account and make your own decision.
word-of-mouth is prolly the best way to make your decision though. i for one dont trust any product review in any magazine, they are just advertisments anyways.
but i do look for reviews on certain products when i am considering buying them.
do you guys remember the mad scramble to find reviews on the D2’s when they became available?
whats more that for the most part we know who has what around here… when i want a review on B&M i’ll talk to adam, wheni want a review on Tein’s i’ll talk to jay (when he gets them in).
a review section would be even more useful for people who arent as well entrenched in the social cliques of this community
What you’re saying is clearly true, but we DO have a “Technical” section to this forum, and it’s the exact same thing. Some people are better at aiding situations then others…
Joe wrote:
“Oh man, I just got these great shocks, they are great for what I want them for. And I saved a bundle!”
Bob replies:
"Oh man, why did you get those piecs of crap? They are the worst ones on the market… get some cash and buy the good ones! -You suck at modding your car!
Mods are going to have a hayday with a section like this…
Simple solution, like Bing said, do your own research, that is what this whole Interweb thing is all about. You search it out, if you don’t find what you are looking for, or enough info about it, post a question.
Here’s a review I wrote about my new Nismo engine mounts for performancenissanparts.com’s site, where I got 'em from:
"These mounts are a lot stiffer than stock, especially if your mounts are worn. A hard rubber compound is used.
I expected better throttle response - they do that. When starting the car now, the engine barely moves! I also expected a bit of vibration added - they do that too, but only a bit on idle, and even less at higher speed - good vibration. You can hear and feel the engine better, really does help the ride feel “tight”. Even my mechanics were impressed and enjoyed the ride.
Be aware of three things before buying. If you have rattles in the car, they may be more noticeable. My car’s cabin engine noise has increased, albeit only slightly (is good though IMO!). Finally, it will raise your engine in the bay about 1 inch. This may pose a problem for some strut tower bars.
All that said, I love em!"
That could be an example, if we weren’t into doing the ‘template’-style reviews.
Let’s at least see if we can come to a conclusion…ie. A ‘Reviews’ section, a ‘Product Reviews’ sticky in ‘Technical’, or just when adding a review in the ‘Technical’ section post like: “Review: Nismo engine mounts” kind of thing.
