Safelite damaged my truck, Damage is $1200 they wanna give me $500, got a question...

So my windshield was cracked from a rock on the thruway, I called my Ins. co. and put in my claim. I choose safelite because they would come to my work and fix it. They sent one guy to do my windshield, to me its a big windshield and thought he might have trouble with it. Well putting in the new one it cracked in half and scratched my hood and damaged my dash, the manager was there with him because he needed a new windshield delivered to my work. He said dont worry about it and assured me that their ins. would take care of it. I go to Carruba that day and get an estimate, its $1238.00 They would repaint the hood and replace the dash. After two weeks waiting for this dash I decided i would fix the shit myself. At this point I dont want no one touching my dash, the navigation, airbags etc. And to top it off the windshield is not seated all the way on the passenger side, it sticks up in the corner.

Ok so my question is can I get the check for the damage estimate? The managers manager told me they would pay to have it fixed the $1200 plus rental car for how long it takes. I told her that I was pissed off and will fix it myself, she said that they would pay me maximum of $500 in the form of a check.

I want the $1200, it doesn’t matter what I do with it thats the damage they did. Does this sound right, am I allowed the damage estimate of $1200?

Well yeah you would think so. How can they offer you 500 to do it yourself and 1200 at a shop? Are they just giving you money for the parts and not for you doing all the labor? I would definitely dispute it, that’s stupid.

In accidents they just cut you a check for whatever the damage/claim/estimate amount was and you’re free to go buy booze and hookers with it if you choose instead of fixing your car.
At least that’s how mine have been.

Maybe they’re just playing a little… hardball.

This is safelite paying for it, not an insurance company.

You should get the amount it will cost to be repaired. No questions.

I can see why Safelite doesn’t want to go along with your plan, but don’t understand why they’re offering you the $500. They want a legit shop to fix it so they can walk away and not have to worry about some DIY hack fucking it up then going back to them crying about how more was messed up. If a shop does the work and messes anything else up that shop is now responsible for it.

Just let the shop fix it (though I’d recommend not Carruba unless you know someone there who will make sure it’s done right). The way I look at it is a good collision shop who deals with this stuff every day probably has a way better chance of doing it right than I would, even if I was extra careful.

↑ I thought the same thing but they damaged it and thats what it costs to fix it regardless. Im sure when they would give me the $500 that I would have to sign something to release them of any other obligations. I told her that i would look into it more and get back to her on monday. Im gonna tell her I want the full $1200, and I will fix it how I want and by who i want. How can they deny that?

What a cluster fuck of bull shit, you should get the full amount, if they damage your truck they are fully responsible for there mistakes.

Go get an estimate from the dealership. It’ll probably more than what Carubba quoted you. Tell them your going to have the dealer fix it because of the shit they’re trying to pull.

↑ I might just do that on monday. Im sure it will be higher. Ray laks is right next door to carubba, I will take it there and see what they say and then I will call that manager.

So does anyone know legally if they are supposed to give me the full amount for the damages or are they just trying to get me to settle? Im definitely not a push over, i will get mad tuff over the phone I aint scured. Seriously though I wont take shit from this lady, i just dont want to get a lawyer involved if necessary.

They damaged your vehicle and admitted doing so. They are on the hook for the repairs. It is their choice if they want to just pay you out of pocket or file a claim with their insurance. Just keep asking for managers/ supervisors until you get what you want. If they won’t connect you, ask for names, employee numbers or what have you.

Oh and don’t forget the rental!! Start calling those rental places and get quotes for vehicles similar to what your driving. This is gonna get expensive for safelite really fast!!

And yeah they are on the hook for the full amount. Maybe file a police report too??? Might help somehow.

Legally insurance has to just cut the check then it’s up to you how to proceed. This isn’t insurance though so I don’t know.

The part I don’t get is why they would offer you the $500. I get them wanting to guarantee it was fixed right. Imagine the legal issues if you DIY it, don’t get the dash back in right, get in an accident and the airbag doesn’t go off. If it was a CYA thing though they’d say fixed at a shop or nothing.

I’ll 2nd getting the dealer quote. Probably push to have the dealer do the work.

Tell them you are calling channel 4. Pass Go, collect $1200.

Yeah, Im assuming she is just throwing out a quick number and trying to get me to bite. I will just call her Monday and tell her that I want the full amount. If she gives me shit, I will get a few more quotes and go with the highest, and get a comparable rental to my Ridgeline should be over $1500.

Honestly I should have researched safelite first, there is a lot of bad reviews online about them, some people getting totally screwed with them not owning up to damages. Im not saying everyone is telling the truth online but there are a lot of bad reviews.

there are going to be bad reviews for just about any company you look at. I would not carry too much into a review in this case. I think going to the dealer is a reasonable request. If you are not in a spot and need a rental I probably would not get one just in case the back out on saying they would cover that. I assume they didn’t give you anything in writing saying they would cover that. What a shit situation. If they give you shit you could calmly explain that you will call corporate and see how they want to proceed or file a small claims suit for the damage to be repaired. I would think they will make it right. If I were in your shoes I would contact corporate anyway to get someone worth talking to involved.

↑ Good advise about corporate. She did tell me that they have a contract with Enterprise car rental which is right next door to Carubba. I have no reason to believe that they wont cover the damages or the rental, they just dont want to fork over the check for the damages to me. Granted I might not fix the car(I will, payed a lot for it and want to keep it nice) but that does not change the fact that the damages occurred. I can live with the dash as you can hardly notice it unless I showed you, but the fact is I know its there and it makes me mad. The hood I can buff out most of it and try to touch up the rest if I really want to cheap out. I plan on getting it repainted, there are a few rock chips on the front and it would be nice to have those touched up. Here are a few pics, it looks like nothing but its there.

I know it looks minimal but its worse in person the scratch is all the way down the hood. Anyway

Sounds like safelite isn’t professional and hires a bunch of idots lol

The guy looked like a Vato, he was nice and apologetic but he deff. did not know what he was doing. Also when i turned the blower for the defroster fucking a million tiny glass shards blew out of the vents in my face, I was fucking pissed.

Holy shit that is noticeable as hell, and when it rained today did water seep in, I’m going to assume it did.

You can always file with your insurance company and let them subrogate against Safelite, then you get your shit taken care of at the shop of your choice and the insurance company does the recovery leg work. Only thing that could suck is the out of pocket expense if you have a big deductible. I wouldn’t want to go this way, but I wouldn’t want to waste too much time if the company isn’t cooperating. From an insurance perspective, NYS only requires a compact replacement vehicle for a claimant, did they say they would give you a comparable truck as a rental? Just a thought. Who do you insure with?
