So I was just reading another article and it mentioned that 25,000 children die a day from preventable causes and they wanted to know why people donate so much to haiti but not those dying children.
OK, first off, I am not trying to be an ass hear, just want to hear some serious discussion/opinions on the matter.
The people who cry about dying children are usually the same people who cry about world overpopulation and unsustainable population growth, which leads to world hunger. DO they not seriously realize that if they saved all those kids every day, all the other problems they worry about would be ten times worse?
As sick as this is: Would you rather have thousands die every day and half the world population hungry/unsanitary or have everyone be saved and the entire world starving and living in their own filth?
Eh, people donate to Haiti because that’s a a natural disaster outside the norm and they genuinely feel bad for those people. Yeah, most of the people in Haiti weren’t exactly living in luxury but they were getting by ok pre-earthquake.
It’s a lot harder to feel bad for people in Ethiopia who can’t feed themselves but still manage to crank out kids. You feel bad for the kids but it’s just not the same.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat??? Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, the only 4th world country on this half of the planet. What sort of logic lets you claim that they were getting by OK?
Their GDP per capita is like $1300/year. Ethiopia is like $900. Haiti’s downright comfortable huh? Most of us make that in 1-2 weeks, no?
If you’re going to hate on Ethiopa for being poor, hate Haiti too.
As for arguing over which children to help… There’s more than enough suffering in the world to make it impossible to rank and prioritize it all. Just do something to help someone if you care.
I personally try to keep my charitible donations close to home. Women’s and childrens hospital (I won’t get into how donating to a for-profit organization is symptomatic of the clusterfuck that is American healthcare), Buffalo food bank, etc.
