I know a few of you on here are backwoods cousin humpers so I need some adviCe. My new home to be has a pellet stove and I need to know where I should buy pellets and if there’s any types / makes to avoid. It’s not the main heat source so I would use it more for ombeeance. Thanks.
My parents have one that is an older model, when they first started to get popular.
There didn’t honestly seem to be much difference between pellet brands, I think we have burned 2-3 different types. I think we are using Allegheny Wood Pellets, they are produced in PA, so semi local haven’t had any issues with them at all (White/Orange bag with a beaver on it). If you look for other brands, just make sure it says low ash on them to reduce how much you have to clean out the stove.
If you are going to burn a lot, I recommend buying in bulk, usually can get a break on 1ton pallets of them. They used to be dirt cheap, however since housing took a dive during the other financial crap prices have gone up a lot. I doubt they will ever be as cheap as they once were.
One thing with our stove is that it has to be cleaned top to bottom several times during the winter season to keep it running correctly. It is really a fickle machine when dirty due to sensors and other crap that makes it run “efficiently”. So, your mileage may vary depending on brand and when it was made, check reviews to see what people normally do with theirs etc.
I am not sure if my uncle is still selling pellets at his shop or not, www.rayssmallengine.net they are in East Otto, not sure how close that is to your new location.
i k now that place by our house hamburg fire place always has pallets for sale
Get the beaver, Allegheny hardwood pellets, no fail. I have an older Lopi Foxfire that I heat my shop with, if you want to get schooled on it, I’ll gladly run mine and show you the ropes.
That guy is an arrogant prick and I would be happy to pull the lever that drops all the pellets he owns on his smug ass. I’d sooner burn my own limbs before buying shit from him. Thanks for the input though.
I may take you up on that. I certainly don’t plan on using this for a primary heat source but with a wife who would have me build her dream home on the face of the sun, I’m sure it will get it’s fair share of use.
You know where I’m at, door’s always open.
