While driving around last night, my secondary fuel rail popped off again. This is only the seocnd time it has happened, but I want to make it a permanent fix. The mounting for the rail is between the head and intake manifold, with two steel studs coming off of that to the rail. Originally, the rail had two tapped holes where two screws would go, over time, the holes stripped out from the steel bolts. After that, I used some JBweld in the studs to secure the rail down, well, now that came off. Any input on what I can do to fix this for good. I was thinking of using Aluminum studs and spot welding around where the rail and studs meet. Any suggestions would be welcome.
I don’t think Al studs would be a good idea. Al is too brittle, and that area seems to be taking a lot of vibration, or else it would not be breaking like that.
Is there something you could weld a steel boss onto it, then use some steel bolts with some sort of rubber/neoprene cushion for the rail to rest on?
It’s not so much at “breaking” off, the rail on the passenger side is popping off from pressure. I thought about getting some L shaped brackets made so they would take the brunt of the tension for the rail.
sean i dont think welding your fuel rails a good idea
I like the rubber/neoprene grommet idea (with loctite tho).
rethread the holes and just run longer bolts?
I have had great luck using Helicoils when I’ve stripped out threaded aluminum. They’re a little pricey for the full kit with tap and tool so look around for a friend that has the set. What size thread was this?
I agree with above that aluminum studs would not be a good idea.
