securing a network?

well if you hide the SSID, the chances of anyone finding it and caring are slim to none.

I live in a house, and I have about 10-15 visible wireless networks everytime I open my laptop. Even with encryption, I am sure I could get into at least a few of them with some effort. Good thing for my neighbors that I am not a scumbag.

Turn off SSID, enable WPA2 and change the username/password on the router. You’ll be fairly safe after that.

You can still pick up AP’s that have a hidden SSID with programs like netstumbler and Windows XP has difficulty when dealing with hidden SSID’s

oh yea good point Stevil, I forgot to mention that changing the access ids for the router.

duh

lol yeah, figured he already did it, but ya never know

also, for extra measure

random key generator.

I believe he lives out in Batavia, standard WPA or WEP will be more than enough, I doubt anybody in that area cares enough to attempt or has the knowledge enough to crack it… lol

Yeah but its easy enough to use WPA2, why use anything else?

Ok So this is off topic, but I remember changing my routers access password and user name, but I cant remember for the life of me how to get in. Any ideas?

you are going to have to reset the router by holding in the reset button for 10+ seconds.

Oh shit i forgot about that. Thanks.

Thanks. Im in.

mine actually just went down for the first time in 6 months, I had to do the same thing…

netgears default is 10.0.0.1 and i think its admin/password and if not that its admin/admin
