securing a network?

how do I secure my network? I just hooked up my router and IDK how to secure it…help a noob out

What kind of router? Linksys 192.168.1.1 admin/admin.

It’s a netgear

Netgear default login is admin/password for the user/pass.

What model is it? Try 192.168.1.1 and should ask for the user/pass and if not, list the model.

the model is WNDR3300

i tried 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 and neither of them worked

mac address filtering is the easiest way, I have found. Oh and hide the SSID

check your user manual, it is undoubtedly in there.

tryhttp://www.routerlogin.net
or
http://www.routerlogin.com

admin
password

I also do what boardjnky said for security.

what? engrish? lol

Turn SSID Broadcast off, and turn MAC filtering on.

You need to set this up on a wired computer. You need to find the mac address for all your connected computers. Turn all the wireless comps on and find a clients table. Copy the MAC addresses, and go into the MAC filter, paste the addresses in there and allow only those to connect. Then kill the SSID broadcast and rename the SSID to something you know. You can turn WPA2 Personal on as well if you like. Should be significantly more secure than anyone around you, so i dont think anyone would target you.

from a command line type ipconfig/all

The gateway is the address that is assigned to the router (assuming you have it hooked up correctly)…

Unplug power on all units, then plug them all in.

Change the SSID to something besides the default.

Get into the router, and setup WPA encryption.

Get it to work, then I usually setup mac filtering.

From there you can turn off SSID display if you want.

rtfm?

I read the manual for you… try these:
Connect to the wireless router by typing any one of these three URLs in the address
field of your browser, then pressing Enter:
http://www.routerlogin.net
http://www.routerlogin.com
http://192.168.1.1

Username: admin
Password: password

Best of luck, if those don’t work hold the reset button in on the back and then re-try.

Don’t use MAC address filtering - any noob can spoof a MAC address.
Turn on WPA2, use a strong key, and change your default un/pw on the router itself.

Of all those things the only thing that would actually keep people out for a bit is the WPA2…

The MAC Address list is just a POS if you have people come over and want to jump on the Wifi…and you can easily change the MAC of of a wifi/ethernet card.

  • WPA2 encryption.

… yea, mac filtering can be a pita, but oh well. it takes ~1 minute to setup someone new. :gotme:

MAC filtering is bullshit , you can change your MAC address easily on a mac / Linux box.
Best way to secure is WPA2, very hard to crack and not worth the time 2.

That works great if you know what you have to spoof your mac as. I agree with “I live in california, I’m a fucking baller” No one is going to spend the time to crack it. There is no point when its just a residential router.

I love it when you hack my port.

+1

I would agree if you live in a house the chances of anything happening are slim…Apartment complex is :tif:
