Shadys Z31 - GlowShift Jigga What?

Okay well to start its a 1989 300ZX 2+2…

About 4-5 years ago the automatic transmission went in the car, my fathers owned it since '91 and as of now the car has 92kmi on it. Last fall i was looking in the garage for something, looked at the Z just sitting there, did some research, in november I went to New Jersey and picked up everything I needed to swap her over to a 5 speed. Finished her up around March after having to deal with a lot of bullshit and not being able to work on her a lot at a time.

As of now the car still sits stock, other than a 2.5 inch catback with a Flowmaster Super44

What deffinately going to happen:

just purchased my Full NA2T Swap:

  • T3 Turbo
  • Exhaust Manifold
  • ECU
  • Oil Pan
  • Oil Return Line
  • Water line
  • 270CC Injectors (will probably end up getting 450CC injectors before i put the motor back in)
  • Front turbo crossmember
  • Driver side turbo engine mount
  • All intake pipeing

The nice thing is that this came off an 85 turbo, the 84 T3’s dident have water cooling and burnt out very easily. The 87-89’s came with the smaller T25.

-Cams: Once I figure out a good grind spec I’m going to have my cams reground by shnieder, or ill try and see if anyone is selling a good aftermarket cam with the specs I want, not many places still sell aftermarket cams already to go for the Z31

-Walbro 255LPH Fuel pump

  • Gutted intake plenum (the vg30’s intake plenums are some of the worse deisnged ever)

  • Intercooler

  • Gut out all emmisions and pretty much everything besides motor, altenator and power steering

  • Either an aftermarket 2.5inch turbo downpipe or a turbo relocation pipe that will put the turbo where the AC unit is and then have a custom downpipe made

  • Full prothane kit for suspension, also engine/tranny mounts

  • Z3R springs with a 1.5 inch drop paired with Bilstein HD’s

What I really want to do may or may not happen because as many of you know I have a kid due in febuary, and i wanna get as much done motor wise as i can before the kid gets here…

If I can find the extra cash the T3 will be replaced with a T3/T4 60-1 , Limited Slip Differential, Satans turbo manifold , Nistune and a few more things

Mainly my realistic goal by next summer is around the 300+ whp range… as anything over 300whp is limited by the turbo. My ultimate goal is around 500-550+ whp which will probably turn into a larger number as i start working on the car over the years…

I can safely make ~450whp on the stock internals without worrying aobut stressing anything to much, but if I got for that I mine as well forge the internals and shoot for a little higher of a number, its certinaly do able and not hard just requires money.

Heres a few pics from the tranny swap (it was inluded when i bought it but no I did not use the clutch that came with it, bought a new kit)

There was a problem when I torqued the flywheel bolts, I torqued them at minimum specs being 72ft lbs, but no placed specified to use this spacer which caused the bolts to strip, I ended up tapping out every hole in the crank.

The second time we got it to go, father took it out (theres no sound for whatever reason, but it was open headers and OMFG it was loud)

Exhaust clip: (the muffler rattles the microphone on the camera so i moved it as far back as I could and it still cuts it off)

The muffler still sounds raspy at higher revs because of a leak and my cat… thatll all be fixed once the snail is on

Yeah thats my friend David. Hes from texas and is currently in japan on a 2 year contract teaching job. Its a 1988 300ZX Shiro Special edition, very hard to come by, only a 1000 were made, I will own one someday, not exspensive, but when one pops up I dont have the money. I was looking on ebay a few months ago there was one with 60kmi on it somwhere in new york, it was like an hour from here, sold for 12 thousand, the thing look absoloutely beautiful… a chick owned it go figure. If I dident have my loan out for school i would have taken one out for that car.

Can’t wait to see this build unfold man. Are you keeping the compression ratio 9:1 or you planning on lowering it to run more boost?

Keeping the 9:1 compression. I will probably only be able to run around 7lbs of boost without detonation on 93 octane. With a good intercooler, and a good tune I should be able to turn it up quite a bit. Maybe even methonal injection… but thats down the road, im not going to get ahead of myself

TURBO PARTS YAY

So I got everything for the turbo swap in today, everything seems to be in good conditon, turbo spins freely, no shaft play but I may have Boxersix take care of it for me anyways…

I’m kind of upset about how the injectors were packaged, the plastic fittings on the bottom of the squirters were busted, but ehh whatever more of a reason to put in the benz 420cc injectors ;D

Yeah, but itll prolly be back together before then, well the motor will be anyways…

Little Update:

So I finally got the 10 yard dumpster and been cleaning out my garage, its almost done, just got some rearranging to do to maximize space for the Z.

On Friday, me and singh took a trip to Vermont to meet this kid Andrew I’ve bought a few things off of. As stated before the guy who shipped my NA2T swap did a horrible job packaging the injectors so they were all pretty much broken. I contacted Andrew and he happened to have a set for 30 bucks. The ones he gave me look almost brand new, and there after the recall nissan put out due to injectors dumping fuel in the cylinders causing fires. He also picked up a 2+2 parts car to do a kouki conversion. Which would be taking the front end off an 87-89 model and putting it on an 84-86 model. So now I have a 2+2 parts car I can take things off of, like the center taillight piece i need and a few other misc things.

Among this trip I got my injectors, a mint stock shift knob, and a Haynes manual for 30 bucks ;D

Well the garage is almost cleaned out… Got the Z in there on the dollies, made it a hell of a lot easier, and once we get the stuff towards the back of the Z cleaned out there will be a ton of room for the motor ;D

And for fun, this is my dads 86 Yamaha Venture, 20kmi on it, its such a nice cruiser, has complete pin striping done by my fathers friend, and he has a 2 person camper that tows behind it that my father painted to color match the bike and his friend I believe dave davis? pinstriped to match his pinstripe on the bike

So saterday Steve came over and we got the motor pretty much prepped to coem out, all I have to do now is unbolt the driveshaft, tranny and motor mounts and shes ready to come out.

We took off my hood, disconnected everything and then had a coffe.

So far no blood has been spilled unlike when I did the tranny
