Shooting the gun, not bullet?

So a few buddies and I were talking and this came up. Say if you put a rod into the barrel of a gun and remotely pulled the trigger, would the gun be launched?

Anyone ever hear/see this? Tried searching for a video but didn’t know what to search by that would give relevant results.

i think it would work…

If the rod has more mass than the gun, or if it is mounted in something like concrete.

Did the plane takeoff?

Do it post a vid

Either the gun would fly or the barrel would explode the energy is going somewhere

just think of it as the inverse of a normal firing situation…the recoil will be absorbed by the rod and the remaining energy will go into the gun instead of the bullet.

I think depending on the mass of the gun it would either move or the barrel / chamber would burst.

+1

yes, it would move at the force of recoil if the barrel doesnt burst first.

I dont think youll do it
I think your chicken…

I don’t really like guns, only shot a rifle, maybe a 2 boxes of shells. Someone must have done it already though…

The barrel will burst. Dont bother, its just a way to get yourself hurt.

In for results.

lets simplify this a bit…

think what would happen if the cartridgel were just sitting on a table and it went off. the bullet and shell would be sent off in opposite directions as the force of the detonation would impact both halves without anything else absorbing the force to keep them in place.

now if you were to hold either the shell or bullet in place when the detonation took place the other half would be sent away…this is essentially the premise that all guns work on. there is a detonation placed between a “fixed element” and projectile. the projectile always has less effective mass than the “fixed element”

by placing a rod into the end of the gun and “unfixing” the gun all you have done is make the gun into the projectile instead of the bullet.

This sounds like a reasonable experiment…

Lets jam a tank barrel onto a telephone pole and press the button.

The forces at play inside of the chamber and barrel of a gun are different from an open space.

The confined space inside of the gun cause immense pressures that if the barrel were plugged, will exceed what the gun can handle.

In simple terms, kablam.

yea, but the gun isn’t held down so maybe not.

Maybe with a .22 or smaller caliber, a very small load .32, .38 or 9mm may work as well, but any gun with mass will be enough to hold the pressure inside for too long, and the will build higher and higher until it bursts.

myth busters…write it in
