side skirt mounting...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/ctnewman2/wtf1000/3.png

in this diagram, item 9 and 10 hold the top of the sideskirt right against the door. Howecer, this is OLD shit. I am sure that it works OK, but i imagine that a better fastener has been designed in the last 20 years.

I can drill/cut anything into the side of the car, and i imagine i can attach most any clip to the side skirt…

What do the clips holding subaru sideskirts on look like? Whatever it is has to be installed with force.

Thoughts?

Do the white plastic clips push into the body of the car?

im assuming they do, the black clip goes on the car, attach white clip to the side skirt and attach as one. im sure it catches from the inside once its snapped in.

that’s not my car in the pic. the sideskirts i have use old shitty plastic clips and rubber grommets. The photo is of a subaru sideskirt… I think i might try and get some of those…

how would you attach them to the side skirt though? you would almost need something to catch the clip once its on the car.

fuck it double sided 3m tape 4tw.

It looks like the white clips snap onto the car. From what I’ve seen those kind of clips usually hold very well. Thats what a lot of bumpers and side skirts that I’ve had to remove have used. If you want extra strength, 3m double sided tape is used a lot to hold on side skirts, side moldings, rear spoilers, etc.

For that Subaru skirt… When the Skirt went on originally that clip would be installed on the Skirt in the “U-groove” first then simply push the end on the white clip into the hole on the rocker. Then when you take off the side skirt you knock it backwards to free the skirt from the clip rather than pull of the skirt straight out and either damage the skirt or rip the head of the clip off. If it breaks it breaks. Trust me. They do. Then slip the skirt back over the clip head. Yeah, its a bitch sometimes. Just line it up and give it a pretty good whack with the hand to clip it in.

This is pretty typical for side moldings, skirts, and a lot of door panels on cars (mostly American) that I have seen. I know GM uses and bunch of different sizes of these style clips and so does Ford and Dodge. You can check out some dealers and ask to see there Door panel and Body Panel push-in clips (Jim Ball is who I use). I think Nissan/Infinity have the beefiest looking clips.

Do you have a picture of where 9 & 10 attach to the skirt? I may have some clips I can send you if I have some that look like they might fit. M&M is great source for clips, screws, and bolts

The mtech sideskirts look VERY similar on the back, except that the U slot is oriented differently. The opening is at the bottom. I’m sure there are a MILLION things i can use, I just want the best ones.

Yeah, not sure who makes the best. Maybe take a walk through M&M when the weather warms up and snag a few to try?

Ask a friend who works at a body shop… preferibly not a DEALERSHIP… just to assure an assortment of clips, and ask… which ones are most permanent, convenient, etc etc… and go with what suites your need?

yeah. who works in a bodyshop and wants to steal me some clips. PM me.

i need them in a few days at most.

what are you looking for, convenient for easy removal, permenant, reliable, solid, able to take abuse?

I doubt theres any need for constant removal once you get this together… thats always an issue for the fasteners on the bike… hence why I ask…

i need something that clips on well and that i can adapt to my application. Preferably something that fits in a round hole (so i can drill), as opposed to a square hole that needs to be precisely cut.

Here are Clips to look at. Click the page numbers to advance.

These are some samples for Round Holes:

GM Door clip (There are little ‘fins’ to hold it in, hard to see)

^^^^ those were what I was picturing as soon as he said circular holes…I break those clips ALLLLL the time when removing them… but thats what i was thinking, the motorcycle uses something similar to a drywall anchor

I think they are made to break so you don’t deform the hole.

indeed…

for some reason that page is blocked at my work…
