neutral
I’m a neutral believer too. A guy at work said again this morning about putting it in low. I kept my mouth shut though, or I would have been stuck in his office for half an hour.
are you guys serious???
i don’t drive autos :kekegay:
but in a 5spd if you aren’t in 1st creeping down a hill, then you are retarded.
i’d rather tranny brake then brake brake onto a road covered in snow… it just doesn’t make sense,
unless it’s a case like this morning when i was going slower than 1st gear drifts with no gas…
or even Tenn…1/2" and traffic has stopped to 10-20 mph…
who said anything about auto vs stick
I agree a stick is much better in the snow, but even then I keep it in neutral when going down a hill. neutral>low gear in the snow
Seems to me that traction is limited by the tire/road interaction. So how does having the tranny in a low gear make you stop better? You still have x amount of friction force, and you’re pushing the car by having it in gear, plus the rear tires aren’t doing anything to help you stop. :dunno:
Reverse, you dumb bastards.
rolling resistance is increased when tranny brakeing… there is less ‘momentum’ to stop?
right?
if the car is in nuetral, it’ll start at 0 mph and roll to 25+
if the car is in 1st, it’ll start at 1mph and slowly climb to 10 - 15mph
see where i’m coming from?
won’t an auto throw you into OD or 2nd or anything but the lowest gear with rolling without and gas being applied? plus autos are generally longer geared… so staying in 1st on a stick goes to 15mph staying in 1st in an auto can get you upwards of 30 mph.
yea, unless you put it in 1st gear, then it will stay there.
Manual’s are much better in the snow IMO.
fyi - 1st gear in my truck at 3000 rpm is like 8 mph, it can coast along in 1st gear at idle (600rpm) at about 1-3 mph.
I use 1st gear. I like the feeling of being in control of the car instead of letting it roll where it wants. Granted control is limited if you are already concerned about sliding. Plus if I need neutral I just stab the clutch pedal.
i used to think the same thing till last winter coming home from altoona down one of the steep hills. my front wheels kept locking up in while in first gear. putting it in neutral and riding the brakes fixed the problem. firstgear/low gear is fine till the roads are real icey then you best be putting it in neutral especially if your driving a stick.
i don’t care about driving in snow because if someone bangs into my bonnie thats free money.
Now that is Ghetto.
i mean i don’t go out of my way beating the shit out of it but i’m not gonna cry if it gets sideswiped and i have to get in the other side. i’d just keep the money. its the last winter for it anyway
it depends on the conditions, usually put it in gear…
neutral no doubt!
geez, how much snow did you guys get? It started snowing here not too long ago, we barely have a dusting…
I don’t really like 1st gear going down-hill… 2nd or 3rd and easy braking usually works fine for me.
