SR20 Timing Chain Question

I have been looking all over the net for an answer to this but can’t find anything. This is for those who have experience building an SR20. I am installing new cams right now and I have the old cams out. The chain is hanging as the FSM states. Is it possible that the chain can come off the crankshaft gear while its hanging or is there not enough clearance for it to come off.

Thanks!

Anyone?

There isn’t enough room. It shouldn’t move teeth.

It wont fall off the crank sprocket but i think it can slip off the teeth and throw the timing markings off.

Don’t go by the timing marks anyway (the coloured links), use this:

Thanks, I feel a lot more comfortable with that counting method. I also found this which makes it very easy to understand: U-M Web Hosting

The counting method is 100% correct 100% of the time, just make sure you take your time and do it right. 1 tooth is like 10 degrees of timing. It’s the difference between your car starting and not.
