SR20det swap

What extra parts are needed for an SR20 swap? Like if I got a complete S13 blacktop . Intercooler? Upgraded fuel pump? Electronics? I found a swap kit at the heavy throttle site that Nis240 posted, but is all that required right away?

Thanks

Is that for a front clip? Like Jared mentioned above, your best and safest bet is to get a clip, not a motor set. Just makes life easier. If you have hook ups and what not for misc. parts and want to save money, then a motor set could do. But generally, a clip will have ALL the needed parts, uncut harness, and you know it wasn’t messed with or banged on shipping (including CAS cover). lol.

It all depends on what you want to do with the car. If you have the cash, probably best just to do the dirty work right away and get it done with. I.E. Front mount intercooler, bov, downpipe, o2 extension, boost controller, exhaust, fuel pump…

But what is needed??? Nothing. If you have a front clip, more or less everything is included to get the job done. I guess one thing that will be needed is possible extra lengths of the heater hosing and fittings for it in the back of the motor, and a longer rad hose to convert to usdm. The clip should have the side mount intercooler with it.

My personal suggestions from experience: it all depends, like I said, on what you have to spend. I would suggest a clutch for SURE, 100%!!!. A frount mount intercooler, bov, fuel pump (engine can cut out at higher speeds), a boost controller (if you have the need for speed)(also can reflect on if you decide on fmic or not), 3" downpipe, and an exhaust of some sort. It will cost more, but a year down the road, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it when you had the chance. But then again, it depends on what you want to/have to spend.

If it is just a motor set, you’ll want to look for or make sure it comes with an ignitor chip, a maf, cam angle sensor cover, uncut harness (not the end of the world), coil packs, all the accessories, turbo (obviously), tranny and such. And the motor set likely doesn’t have the side mount intercooler with it, so you’ll have to purchase one or go fmic anyways.

Hope that helps in any way.

Thanks, that does help a bit. I don’t think I have enough for a clip though, so I guess I’m going for engine kit.

:Edit: Also I’ve heard that when doing an SR20 swap you need a HICAS canceler bar deal. because the SR doesn’t have the HICAS pump. Is this true?

Aslo, when you say O2 extension, what exactly do you mean?

how much are you looking at to so a SR20DET conversion if you do it yourself, i work as an auto apprentice at canadian tire southpark so i have access to both tools, my own and borrowed, and everyone’s skill at my disposal, so just raw parts

At least $3000 for the engine and all the neccesary parts, if you want a close to stock set-up.

when I thought I had everything I needed i really didn’t, i’d say be prepared for the unexpected things, although I did a timing chain kit and all too so that cost me a little more.

so basically get a s14 and have about 3.5 grand with a 1.5 grand buffer?

Yeah that should do it. My swap with stock sidemount and recirc valve ran me probably $3300 or so and I installed it myself. I had to take it in to have some troubleshooting done which was pricey.

Also, replace all the gaskets on the engine, especially on the tranny as well.

Don’t go through what happened to me and have the tranny input shaft seal leak all over your clutch. That is not fun.

I did the swap myself, followed the heavy throttle directions, but didn’t buy the clip. This was the part that I was ill prepared for. I think that in total it took me a month just to get all may parts in from japan while my car sat dormant (the old engine died, and the sr20 was sitting on the driveway).

With a little creativity and some imagination, I was able to piece together parts from other cars to make them work for my vehicle. Now I am going to sound like a poverty case when I mention the next few steps, but the cunstruction is the fun part, so

I spent many hours wandering the wrecking yards searching for an approprate radiatior for this engine (the upper return line on the engine is on the opposite side of the USDM). My solution was a radiator out of a 1991 Mazda 626 (I think). It came with a fan and all I really wanted. With out the crank fan in the engine bay, there was about 8-10 inches of space in which the rad could fit in. It cannot sit in the stock location as it is too tall, so I built a mounting system. Painted it the same colour as the car, it is hardly noticable.

I have never had troubles over heating although I do run stock boost.
All of the plumbing was done with trips to Part Sourse and Rona.

Good Luck, just make sure you got all the things you need for the swap before you start, so you are not down for a long time. This time of year is good to purchase an engine as there is not as much demand.

Just found this site again. For the Longest time i forgot about it.

Vacuum lines on a SR, harness rerouting and more

[qoute] Here are several things to do that will make the swap easier. Start with an almost empty fuel tank that has ONLY Premium 92 or higher octane gas in it.
Is 92 octane gas required at all times with the sr20s? :?
im looking to buy a sr20 engine. anyone know any good places in edmonton or online i can purchase one?

I don’t know where you get 92, but I’d only use 91 (V-Power, imo). If your worried about gas price difference between regular and premium, you should seriously reconsider the swap and buy a bicycle  .

Try jdmsource.ca or 403drift.com (autodream) both are in Calgary and would be worth the trip down.
