Subaru crew.. need help

friend has a 99 rs auto

its overheating… he had a fluid flush and radiator cap and still overheats

most likely the water pump?

how bad a job to change?

Was the coolant bled properly? It takes awhile on Subarus.

Does the heat work?

i haven’t gone to see the car yet just going by what he told me… they need a long time to burp?

Really long. Half hour or more. If he has heat, then it probably just needs bleeding.

If there’s no heat, its the water pump or thermostat.

I’ll check it out… any idea on job length? difficulty?

“It will work, but once the engine temp goes above what it is normally at (about 1/3 hot) it will lose the heat and just blow cool air out”

I think its 4 hours by the books. Need to pull radiator, remove crank pulley, timing belt covers, timing belt, cam pulley, idler pulley, tensioner (and compress tensioner), water pump and thermo.

Its a good idea to replace the timing belt at the same time, too.

Sounds like the thermostat is done. :frowning:

I don’t remember if the two bolts on the water neck are accessible without removing everything. If it is, might as well just replace the thermo. If it isn’t, replace pump/thermo/belt and possibly oil pump.

thermo has been replaced

must be the pump…

he says he had a shop do thermo, cap and fluid flush

Or its not bled, but he should be getting heat.

i’ll make sure its bled, and see what happens

It may just need bled properly. Start by making sure that’s covered.

+1. Last time I did it was 45+ minutes. I’d check this first as it’s the easiest thing, especially since it is still blowing cold…

Bleed,bleed, bleed again

If not it must be a headgasket:P Seriously they had issues if it was a dual cam

MY99s were the first year of the PhaseII block and went to single cam. But HGs were still a risk, Subaru is warrantying them still for 100k miles.

How many miles are on the car?

98k
