So my brother and I swapped the transmission on his 99 Durango 5.2l with a rebuilt one from a 5.9l. Now the new trans wont shift and it shakes the truck in reverse. Normally I would associate this as a valve body problem, however we never switched the transmission control computer over as we didn’t think it would be a problem.
My question is does this sound like a computer not allowing it to shift properly or does this sound like a bad valve body problem.
More information can be provided, but this is all i have at the moment.
It makes sense. The ECU is used to reading the module that came in that vehicle.
If you put that one back in it will read as normal, i’m not sure what the difference in gearing is but it may be fine, it may not. I’m assuming it’ll be the same.
Allow me to clear things up as I didn’t seem to explain my self well.
The trans swap took place because the original transmission took a dump. The idea was to do a straight swap, same trans for same trans, however due to a miscommunication I rebuilt the wrong transmission. The 5.2l takes a 44RE and I rebuilt a 46RE for a 5.9l. After doing some research it was decided that we would try and use the 46RE as it has been done before. After getting everything in and presumably buttoned up, my brother tried to test drive it and ran into the above problem. We didn’t change the TCM as we figured that they would be the same. Now we’re in a bit of a jam as he hasnt much money to put into this truck.
Cliffs: How do i tell if its the valve body or the TCM?
no grinding or whining noise. When I took for a TD it would, for lack of a better term, shudder when reversing, and would not shift out of first gear when in drive. Could have taken it right to the redline in first gear, but thought that might be a bad idea considering I don’t have the money to replace it again. Like my bro said we’re leaning towards the TCM but the shudder in reverse has got me worried that could be the valve body or even a mechanical malfunction(ie, something misaligned, out of tolerance, or physically damaged. I’m going to see if i can find someone with a 5.2l dodge truck with the 46re and see if they will let me try their TCM in my truck. If not I will have to probably get one from a junkyard. Thanks for the imput so far guys.
