swing arm removal question

i’m pulling a motorcycle apart for the first time, and i’m about take off the swing arm.

my friend is telling me i’ll need a spring compressor for the rear shock.

i’m kinda thinking i might not. neither of us has done it, we’re just both guessing by what it looks like.

if it matters, it’s an '87 honda hurricane cbr 600. thanks in advance guys, sorry if it’s a stupid question.

I never saw the rear end on the hurricane but I’m pretty sure the spring is on the shock and it should bolt to the frame and the swingarm along with the dog bones. Pretty easy to take off you just need to support the bike somewhere other than the swing arm.

Hopefully this helps: http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1987-honda-motorcycle-cbr600hurricane/o/m2038

Remember to support the bike properly when removing the swingarm as you won’t be able to keep it on rear-stands obviously.

thanks for he help guys. the rear of the bike is being hung up on chains.

i just needed to make sure the spring wouldn’t pop out and leave me unable to put it back together.

spring should be mounted on the shock, in which case you will just unbolt the whole assembly. you only need to compress the spring to remove it from the shock.

^ this guy.

when Tim and I did the swing-arm swap on his bike I think we just unbolted the bottom of the shock and let it hang from the top mount… I don’t remember removing it completely but I could be wrong.

Yeah we took the whole shock off cuz I put the new one on there.

oh yea that’s right. i forgot the shock was different.

in any case, you don’t need to worry about the spring flying off
