Taking pictures in the dark...

thanks pal

No problem. In the future do not be afraid to ask for input (despite this thread) I think your title and opining post deceived myself and others into posting with out knowing your skill level, hence the harshness haha. Get a basic understanding of your settings and do a lot of shooting, you’ll learn quick enough. Oh and use the Rockwell guide to help you out at this very basic stage, but once you have a better understand of the camera, dont be afraid to branch out. Rockwell’s guide speaks to the very basic of SLR users. It leaves a TON to be had from your camera with out knowing any better.

ah I can handle getting kicked in the head. I’ve got tough skin. lol
better to take criticism and use it constructively than to cry about it.

That it is. You do have to remember where we are though. Most would rather cry about it.

First one is cool, but grainy…the rest are …meh

any improvement?

stop trying to show off your wicked cool lights… nighttime photos kick ass cause everything is lit up…

just look those are all nighttime

The second round of shots is at least clearer.

I bought a few books for my D40 that you could benefit from. They make them for the D60 too. Seeings how it’s the same as the D40 you can use them if you can’t find them for the D60.

Nikon D60 Digital Field Guide by J. Dennis Thomas Here
Nikon D60 Magic Lantern Guide by Simon Stafford Here

Both books did a good job of explaining basic concepts and whatnot about the camera, even explaining how to set the camera for different shooting events (night, action, macro, landscapes, portraits, etc). Check em out. Also check out nikoncafe.com You can get good ideas for how to set up for shots. Lots of knowledgeable guys/gals there.

try to get more lit up in the background. For example:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g60/griffiscool/night_audi/IMG_2386Medium.jpg

The audi shots are ok but would be a lot better with some white balance tweaks in lightroom to compensate for the sodium bulb street lights that make everything look orange.

Plus I’m rarely a fan of headlights being on in night shots.

The grain is gone. ISO 200
It’s in focus

The background is way too dark and boring
All your lights being on would have blown out the background even if it was good

But yeah, things are looking better. Now go find some better backgrounds and experiment taking pictures with and without your car lights on. I think you’ll be a lot happier with the lights off pictures.

This is the one place I like shooting in RAW too because you have more options for adjusting exposure and white balance if things are “off” when you get home. And chances are with night shots something is going to screw you up, be it a light source you didn’t consider or a type of light you didn’t realize was there (tungsten or sodium street lights etc).

Oh how I love pictures that randomly cut off part of the subject for no apparent reason.

There really isn’t a decent picture in this thread.

in my picture the vehicle itself isn’t meant to be the main focal point.

there’s no car here but what do you guys think about this picture?

only good pic ^

Your white balance is horribly off, unless you were going for that coloring effect.

Edit:
Just looked at the EXIF, you should have turned the ISO way down and lengthened your exposure time to 20-30 seconds.

+1

I need to start scouting some good night shooting spots for when the weather turns nice. Places that don’t have power lines right in the damn shot. :frowning:

the last picture I posted was actually taken before any of the others in this thread. I like how it came out though.

ISO needs to come WAY down, and you need to compensate with exposure, also the WB is absurd, but if that was the effect you where going for then fair enough.
