Tattoo School

I just think its funny that to become a hairdresser (hair grows bck if its fucked up) you need 1000 hours of experience to get a license, yet to become a tatoo artist (permanent fucking shit) you just have to exhibit you follow all the health regulations to get a license.

Some counties don’t even require certain health things. I think it is saratoga county where you can legally tattoo in a camper on the side of the road if you wanted too.

That’s fucking nuts!

I hear ya. My girlfriend is currently apprenricing. She has 5 years of art school with a bfa under her belt and paid $XXXX to start her apprenriceship and isnt getting paid. Works 5 days a week there.

I think the whole thing is a LITTLE excessive. You legitimately need a course in BBP’s and practice setting up and using machines but you don’t need years of apprenticing like some people claim. Most of what apprentices do is setup stencils and get the artists machines/area prepped which can be learned in weeks. Practice is where it’s at, loading the machine with a pencil and drawing to get your hand strength/dexterity is a good place to start and using pig skin is a great way to practice what skin feels like. I’ve done it, it’s not cake but it’s not rocket science either.

Long story short: 2 weeks at this bunk ass school is going to do NOTHING for you and apprenticing is still the way to go. You can teach yourself the art without harming yourself or other people though and lots of people started that way and have become amazing tattooists. I would still recommend being under the supervision of a good tattooist though to avoid starting off on the wrong foot and developing bad habits early on.

what shop? i go see greg lodato at planet ny.

Yeah man, hes horrible at getting back to me :lol

He’s at Extoria right now, I was just up there last Tuesday.

Yeahh, i remember him saying that, im guessing hes full time up there? Hopefully going to head back to him soon, its been a while

My friend’s wife got a tattoo there and it looks ok and her mom has gotten a few done there.

I wouldnt want a ‘student’ giving me a tattoo no matter how cheap it might be.

x2, I went to the bronx for mine and paid way more then anyone else would charge for quality. The rapper Mase was getting one done next to me when I was getting mine done lol… Drives me crazy when people go tattoo shop to tattoo shop to find the best deal… WTF, that shits on you life lol.

So awful… best tats I’ve seen on a local are on Heather Hammond which I believe were done by DPL.

I like this one from the school

Nice permanent markings, you piece of shit

Do you even have any tattoo’s? I’ve been getting tattooed in our area for the last 10 years and all of mine have come out just fine. There’s absolutely no reason to go across the country or to NYC to get a tattoo. I think a couple people mentioned The Dead President’s Lounge. There’s a place in Schenectady that a bunch of my buddies have gotten work done at (the name isn’t coming to me at the moment) I find it pretty hard to believe that you have to travel outside of our area to get work done.

no shit, i go to sag at PNY haha. greg did my girlfriends tattoo i believe

The place on Upper Broadway in bellevue ?

Thanks for the info guys, just signed up and am going to the bank tomorrow to get my tuition money out. Who’s first??

Slingin ink

I got my tattoos local because theres an artist that does great japanese work that I happen to love.

HOWEVER… I have yet to see anyone with a grasp on shading and highlighting like Tim Kern around here.

That’s mine and wh3els buddy getting his work done by Kern. Amazing work as far as I’m concerned.
