Tech help

Looking for someone tech savvy to help with computer issues as I am not.
Have an ASUS laptop model #K53E-BD4TD . 2yrs old
Running sluggish, and a pop up RegCleanPro by systweak Inc keeps trying
to run a scan and can no longer navigate firefox with out pop ups and add-ons
taking over.
If someone would be able to help, I’d be willing to compensate.
Also looking for microsoft office suite to be installed.

Please call / text me at 716-578-9300

Thank you,
Nick

That’s an easy one…though sometimes time consuming. Backup your data and run the recovery utility…assuming the recovery partition hasn’t been overwritten of course.

I’ll give it a shot, super hard to operate the system without the pop ups / scan trying to take place

You can recover data in safe mode. Hit F8 when booting up, though many of the bugs these days manage to cause issues even in safe mode. Worth a shot.

When trying to open any folder / window. FF opens up to a blank page asking for an add-on to be installed.
When the browser is closed the RegCleanPro icon reappears on my desktop (where I previously deleted it)
And tries to run again.

Forget firefox, get your documents/pics/music off the computer and do a clean install of windows. can be done in less than an hour.

Also, be sure to download your LAN/wireless driver before hand (probably from another computer). then you can download fresh drivers from there.

The first thing you download from the internet after installing windows should be microsoft security essentials.

Driver will be built in if he has left the recovery partition in tact. Thanks to LZ I’ve made EMET 4.1 part of my standard image. Good shit.

^ Unsure about how to download LAN / wireless driver

Here we go!

  • Try and disinfect the computer as much as possible. ESPECIALLY if you are backing up stuff. If the virus or infected file is sitting in a directory you’re backing up, then you’re going to wind up right back here.
  • Download and run RKill (USE THIS LINK) if whatever is going on in your computer prevents it (USE THIS ONE INSTEAD). This is a little program that opens a command window and runs. It kills known malware and grayware processes to allow you to run an Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware program.
  • Download, update, and run Malwarebytes (LINKY). Start with a quick scan (~20min) then run a Full Scan(~1hr-1hr30min). Always try and run this in normal mode, as opposed to Safe-Mode. Their techs and instructions even confirm that.
  • Uninstall any toolbar, free game horseshit, or anything like that. Use the normal Programs and Features option in your control panel for that.
  • Download and Run ADWCleaner (LOOK ANOTHER LINK!). This program will uninstall and delete remnants of known toolbars, and crapware. CAUTION If you use Chrome, I’d suggest going in and remove the extensions manually and NOT checking the items for deletion in ADWCleaner. For Advanced users you can run ADWCleaner with a /DisableChromeDetection switch to prevent it from scanning chrome. I’ve seen this screw up profiles so just don’t do it.
  • Computer still not quite right? Download and run ComboFix (HOLY LINK MOTHERFUCK BATMAN). Try and exit your anti-virus first before running this. If you can’t it usually isn’t a big deal, but it will warn you when it runs, that your anti-virus is active, it even beeps your system speaker. ComboFix is usually a last resort type program, but it works really well.

Now I’m assuming based on the model that you are first running Windows 7, and secondly that it’s 64-bit. Easy way to tell is go to Start >> Run >> type C: hit Enter. Do you see a Program Files (x86)? If you do, you’re running 64-bit. If not you are running 32-bit (x86). Now it’s time to back up. Easiest way is to use an external hard drive and Windows Easy Transfer. To initiate Windows Easy Transfer, click your Start button, type Easy in the search box and run the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. Choose what you want backed up. Really you probably only need your profile stuff under %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Users&lt;YOUR USERNAME></b>. That includes your My Music, My Documents, Desktop, etc. Once you’ve triple checked that you have everything you need stored on an external or cloud device (Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, whatever). NOW we can reformat the computer.

To initiate the reimaging of your computer restart it and when you see the BIOS screen (Should be a ASUS screen) when you first boot up, immediately hit the Recovery key whatever that is. On most computer models I’ve seen they use F11. You want to do a Full Factory Image Restore and choose NOT to backup files if you are given the option. Since you’ve already backed up, it will just waste Hard drive space and make the process take longer. Let the computer do it’s thing and then you should be sitting at the desktop looking like it did when you first fired it up. As stated before we want to get some reputable free anti-virus on your computer ASAP. Chances are the computer came with a trial of one and it’s most likely Norton. Go ahead and remove that by using the official Norton Removal Tool (OMGZ DER IZ A LINK). If it’s another A/V let me know and I’ll point you to the Uninstaller. After your computer reboots from that install, install Avast (LINKERZ) or Microsoft Security Essentials (DAT LINK THO). I prefer AVAST to MSE now because it’s been catching more than MSE has. Also download and install the EMET 4.1 Tool (LOOK AT ALL THESE LINKS). Now download Chrome for your browser (LINK), and also install the Ad-Block Plus (FREE NUDES…J/K IT’S A LINK) add on.

<OPTIONAL>
If you have licensed software like Office or Photoshop or something. Download the Belarc advisor (LINK) and run it. It will generate an HTML report and towards the middle of the report will be your software with the license key information on it.

Yeah that’s a static page, you can’t link to the specific model. He shouldn’t need drivers if he is installing from the recovery partition. If so, I’ll make a dropbox link.

Good stuff right here, that’s what I would of done

Thank you prog,
Just what I was looking for. In the process of doing aforementioned steps

Edit: Update:
Step 1: Did full scan with what software I have (McAfee internet security / security scan plus) detected nothing…
Step 2: Downloaded RKill, installed and ran… it found no malware and terminated one process…
Step 3: Proceeded to DL and run malwarebytes, found 145 infected or damaged files… quarantined and deleted all…
Step 4: Uninstalled what I could from control panel. Wasn’t much in there as I do not use toolbars / DL often…
Step 5: DL and ran ADWcleaner… found countless things to delete / cleanup, I did not un-check anything specific as
I am running FF not Chrome.
Step 6: I skipped installing and running combopro, as the previous tools worked quite well. If it is advised to run this
as well please LMK!
Step 7: In the process of finishing up file back up. There was not much to back up besides pics, movies, few documents
Step 8: New to me, is restoring factory image… I’ll give it a shot

Thanks a bunch

Looks like F9 might be the button to press during startup to restore from the factory partition.

Do you have the recovery partition or no? If no download drivers, if yes you’re wasting your time & energy.

Yes I do,
Got as far as my last post and got lost so called a buddy of mine who is
a little more tech savvy then I am. Not sure what he did but seems like its taken
care of. A little concerned though, some of the tools he used I’ve never heard of or seen before
and he installed google chrome that is spitting out pages in russian… ugh this is a headache
Would I be able to drop this laptop off with someone to check his work?

Edit:
He also attempted to convert my desktop from win vista to win 7 but is now prompting me to
run both

LOL the old “I have a friend who’s really good with computers”. Whereabouts are you located.

lol yeah stupid move on my part. I was good with your tips until the factory image intall
I’m near Buff State campus
