Testing the integrity of the ice on my pond

I was considering breaking out the lawnmower for just that purpose.

Considering that there are only a few of us who actually skate/play hockey, I’m starting to consider some sort of rudimentary curling event instead. Less propensity to drop your beer, compared to hockey also.

Def. in for curling

I’m in for anything that involves ice/beer. I’m still bringing my skates though.

I’d be in for this.

Also, Kan Jam on ice with booze could be pretty dangerous and hilarious.

Curling, eh? I call @Paulo!

Well, here’s the issue. So, I don’t have $4-$6k to throw down on a set of curling stones. Guys at the shop were brainstorming a little about how to make some sort of substitute. Maybe some quickcrete poured into a wide flowerpot with a bent piece of rebar sticking out of the top? Spray paint lines and targets? Also, looking at long-range forecast, it looks like it may start getting warmer at the end of next week, which means that this Sunday may be best.

Anyway, just putting thoughts out there.

And @JayS, I like the Kan Jam idea. I’ve got one set.

I’ve got a set as well, plus I got the glow in the dark official Kan Jam disc for xmas.

This Sunday looks pretty screwed for me though.

+1 to both. Kan Jam tourney…?

For a one time curling thing I’d just freeze some jugs of water.

If it’s a hit and you’re going to play a lot take it to the next level with concrete:

That water jug thing is so simplistic and perfect for my needs. Thanks!

Ok, update. Since it will never, ever get warm again, I’m tentatively scheduling a gathering at my place for Saturday March 8th. The curling thing is way too complicated, so it’s going to turn into a big ass game of American Shuffleboard. Sort of like this, for those unaware of the layout, but much longer. Maybe 100-120’

I’ll have a decent sized gas grill available.

Bring whatever other supplies you want/need (beer, chairs, other lawngames).
Right now, I’ve got about 10 1 gallon jugs. I’ll pick up some food coloring, and start filling and freezing them.

Also, might need a supply of shovels, depending on weather the day before. I’ll do my best to start clearing snow off of the pond this weekend and next week.

Again, this is somewhat tentative, but I think we need to do something to break this weather monotony, so I’ll say we’re 90% good to go.

Can we get a roll call?

Ok, shuffleboard surface is shoveled off. Ice is a bit wavy underneath from car tracks. Oops. Not sure if I should spray it down, salt it, or both to try to even it up. Thoughts?

How close to the snowmobile trail are you?

If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s a couple of miles south of the house.

Ok, little updates. Got together my “curling rock” supplies last night and started prepping them

So looks like there is a bit of a warm up on Friday. I’m hoping this works in my favor to help even things out, since it’s kind of rough after the car antics. I’m going to flood the area tonight for a while also.

If you’re thinking about coming, please PM me, and I’ll give you address/location details.
The plan is from Saturday noon until whenever. 6pm maybe? Playing it pretty loose really.

One of these will help smooth out the surface.

Wow, this is the first Saturday in the last 2 months I don’t have something planned. I’m down for some giant icy shuffleboard.

So, with a decent amount of interest, I spent some time yesterday and cleared off another course. I’m hoping that the little warmup Friday will help smooth things out. Still pretty rough.

Oh, and bring lawn chairs if you don’t want to sit in the snow.

Ok I’m in. Bringing my kanjam set as well.

As for smoothing it tomorrow’s high of 40 and sunny should help.
