Text Or Voicemail - Which Do You Prefer?

There are two kinds of phone users in the world: people who leave voicemails for other people and people who ignore voicemails from other people.

Two recent articles echoed the other side of a message I’m hearing from many adults/parents in my generation and older:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/etiquette-redefined-in-the-digital-age/
http://gawker.com/5989952/modern-mobile-etiquette-dont-leave-me-a-voicemail-unless-youre-dying?utm_source=lifehacker.com&utm_medium=recirculation&utm_campaign=recirculation&post=58208045

Once upon a time an older generation refused to leave a message for a machine because they thought it was rude and impersonal. People would leave messages saying, “I know you’re screening my call” as if this was a bad thing.

Now we have an older generation that is befuddled with how texting has become the norm, how many they are trying to reach refuse to answer their phones or even listen to voicemail but instead will only respond to texting or email. We have teenagers who will sit in a room together and rather than talk to each other will text.

So are the tides shifting? Has the form of communication become texting as the primary means of casual connection? When is it appropriate and when is it not to leave a voicemail?

Are there some conversations that really ought to happen by real, actual, conversation? Like breaking up with someone as a for instance. Have we reached a stage where real conversation only happens in certain situations and much of life is governed 140 characters at a time?

Answer the questions, read the articles, and then let’s hear your thoughts.

While I definitely deal with texting more, I’m impartial. If someone calls me and I’m not there to answer and they leave a message I’ll listen to it. However I hate when someone needs to convey a novel in a text message.

They are great for things like “Hey can you pick up XYZ from the store later” As you have something to go back to and reference for what you need rather than having to re listen to a voice mail.

However it is kind of funny how I have a “Cell phone” that as years go by is used less and less as a phone and more and more as an everything else.

I text for conversation but when i need something to happen i call. No point in fucking around texting when a 30 second conversation can take care of it.

Oh and fuck voicemail. I never listen to that shit.

Sext…i mean text

Look how classy i am everyone.

Fuck off Chad I was joking

Sometimes its easier and more convient to call, like when driving.

I dont have texting on one of my cell phones so I have to leave/get voicemails on that one and I do a mix on my other phone.

Hate voicemails… If it wasn’t for business, I’d fucking never check. Email or text.

I’m big on texting, especially in my line of work. I just ask my clients what they prefer, and if they say texting, that’s the only way we communicate really unless it’s something I need to know immediately.

yea no you’re not here for attention.

wow bro you really drank the car dealer koolaid. listen to you all like “My line of work” trying to sound all professional and shit. how many customers have seen your bare ass lol

None, but thanks. Sorry I take pride in my work?
