THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

You really can’t brick a phone by screwing up the OS. Hell, we tired a rm -fR / in the shell on a jailbroken phone and still was able flash it back. The 3G and on have a bios type boot that allows you to restore the software before any OS even loads. Just look up DFU mode to restore if something bad happens.

You can jail break the 3.1.3 using some tools but if you are on a 3GS or 3rd Gen Touch there is a significant layer of security you can run into problems with so you may be SOL.

yea iv been chilling on 3.1.2 for a while now jailbroke with Rain. nothing is really new in the update

Ya the 3.2 is at beta 4 already so hopefully the new release will be out for the new iPhone. People are still saying there will be a 4.0 release tho in the next month too.

WOW! Finally an iPhone like Android phone that is all touch, no keyboard.

Apple really needs to setup their game for the next iPhone. These Android phones are getting better and better and if Apple doesn’t make some improvements to the interface and phone itself, I am really considering staying with them again. I can tolerate not having 4G and dealing with the 3.5G like the iPhone 3GS uses but they need some solid improvements to keep up.

Some notable points are 720p HD video, HDMI out with adapter, mobile hotspot with no hacks, and a possible Voice and Data at the same time over CDMA which was ATT’s big difference in their ads. Just on Sprint :frowning:

there are a bunch of all-touch android phones out

Nexus One and HTC Eris … among others

Pretty damn similar to the iPhone…running android

Shit i forgot the CTIA Wireless is going on this week. Thats why all these phones are being shown off. Lol.

if there is no multitasking in it i am going to say that apple is pretty much going to be done for

Android is quickly nipping at their heels IMO, the only real thing it lacks are all the apps. Since it’s a relatively new OS, I’m guess a lot more people will be designing android apps.

care to make a wager on this?

absolutely because its pretty much a given that 4.0 will have multitasking and if it dont a lot of people are talking about moving and getting nexus one or other. plus the UI needs to be undated badly its very boring now compared to other phones out

The past releases had hyped rumors from sites like Engadget and Wired with wish lists but this year there seems to internal sources saying the possible feature list. So far I have seen:

-Multitasking
-New home screen
-Wireless iTunes Sync

They need to revamp the whole thing. It was a game changer when it came up but I would bet a lot of money that the new iPhone 4OS is gonna be really revamped in look and features since they are already saying the 4th gen iPhone hardware will include a 1Ghz A4 processor.

I personally would be happier with a better screen, multitasking, and faster processor.

WOW APPLE!

So far they have really wowed me on this conference. Really adding features with big concerns with power consumption when they implement it which is nice since the battery life blows as it is.

  • Multitasking that is pretty sweet. Pauses games so you can go back to where you were. Apps like Pandora can be backgrounded and then controller from the lockscreen like you can on an iPod. Function is provided by a framework for appstore apps so the actual app isn’t fully running. No tech deep dive tho yet of how it actually is working.
  • Playlist creation on the iPhone
  • 5x Digital zoon
  • Touch to focus video
  • Bluetooth keyboard support
  • Change home screen wallpaper
  • Voip and backgrounding for apps like Skype to still recieve calls. Calls come in a popup box with slide to answer or a similar close/answer box like a text message. Also can background active calls so you can run an application just like a cell call. You get the in a call bar at the top to tap to bring it back.
  • Background location. Two classes of apps GPS and Specific locations like Loopt/Foursquare. Now you can listen to music and have your GPS directions going in the background. To save power with it running, it can use cell locations for GPS or the actual GPS chip. Also can set what apps can run GPS in the background.
  • Local push notifications so the apps can popup notifications locally and doesn’t need to use Apple’s servers.
  • Homescreen folders for applications instead of 15 home screens with unsorted apps.
  • Used to have 180 apps on the home screen, now you can have over 2000.
  • Unified inbox. All messages in one place. Also they showed in the image with more than one exchange inbox!

I’ll keep updating…

Wow, this is great news.

Better writeups if you are interested in following it live.

haha so far everything they have put it has been available with JB
