You should be able to preorder up till the day before the release if you want it shipped. Apple amped up production so they don’t run into another iPad situation so I think even if you order next Wednesday morning, you still could probably pick it up at the Apple store Thursday.
I am waiting till the madness ends so I can talk to someone at ATT. I thought there was some customer loyalty discount on new equipment you can use that may take off a part of the price.

You can go in through AT&T, don’t log in, you’ll see 4, then select it that way. I just want to go through apple.com to keep my data plan.
Pre-ordered my 32gb at the ATT store at Milestrip and Amelia.
Took an hour but all pre-ordered through the Transit/Maple store.

I went with the 16 because I haven’t run out of space on my 8gb yet, in black, and stuck with my unlimited data even though I’ve never come close to 2gb in a month. I figure with a much faster phone that can properly multitask I may end up using more data now.

I guess it doesn’t matter because there was no way I was camping out on launch day to try to get one.
Just pre-ordered mine with ATT. I would go to the store but the wait I had with the 1G phone sucked big time. Only problem I ran into was it would not let me transfer my number now into the iphone preorder. I had to select the “Give me a new number” button. Going to call them later this week or when I get the phone to see if my number now can be transferred over.
