THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

Yep, did the swipe to jailbreak, seems fine. Chuckled to myself how stupidly simple this jailbreak was. I tested MMS and it’s still working. Getting a lot of errors in Cydia just now from apt.modmyi.com. Guessing the site is just getting crushed with people jailbreaking though.

Guess I’ll let it settle down a bit, how does one un-JB? Is it as simple? I assume apps that you’ve purchased through AppStore stay active if you restore? I don’t know how much desire I have to dick around with anything other than turning the phone in to a wifi hotspot, can you do that? I’m fine paying for apps

Just running a restore un-jailbreaks. All your legit apps you backed up in itunes stay, anything you installed through Cydia or pirated apps go away. I’m just looking into wifi hotspot creation now. First one I found was this:
http://rockyourphone.com/index.php/mywi.html

Not sure if there is a free alternative yet.

Is there a central location for “must have” aps here? I deff want a FREE wifi ap…

Jailbreak is mostly for tweaks on the system level. AppStore has a lot of applications that run and close but there is a great number of Jailbreak tweaks.

Must have ones I use:
-QuickReply for SMS - Double tap the SMS on a lock screen and simply reply without unlocking your phone
-MiWi - Turn your phone into a USB modem or WiFi Hotspot
-3gUnrestrictor - high quality Youtube video over 3G, larger appstore downloads, force apps to use 3G if WiFi isn’t available
-StatusNotifier - Email, IM, SMS, missed call, and voicemail icons on the status bar

Other popular ones:
-LockInfo - email, twitter, calendar, sms, missed calls, etc. on the home screen
-Winterboard - Themes and tweaks
-ToneFX - change the ring tone for any system sound

Just a heads up, the cracked MyWi install from sinfuliphonerepo.com is not iphone 4 compatible.

Let me clarify that… it sure as shit wasn’t compatible with mine because after installing it my phone would only boot into safe mode because the springboard crashed every time. Just got done running the restore and my backup from this morning is re-syncing now.

At least Apple makes restoring one click simple.

EDIT: 3:25pm and it’s back to being jailbroken with all my apps loaded back up. Shouldn’t have taken this long but I’m at work and there were some long pauses where it was prompting me to click OK during the restore, reboot, re-jailbreak, resync, reboot process.

Here is the working MiWi work around that works on iPhone 4.X.

  1. Install MyWi from Cydia, this will also install RockApp if not installed.
  2. Launch MyWi, register to make an account or login if you have one. Keep Launching and Closing until trial starts. (9 Days)
  3. Remove MyWi in Cydia (NOT ROCK!!)
  4. Download and Install this DEB http://www.mediafire.com/?fspxpnm3juf4n8b
  5. Remove RockApp in Cydia (YOU MUST DO THIS FOR CRACK TO WORK)
  6. Reboot your Device, not respring.
  7. Launch MyWi and it should work. (It says cracked by Elpelle6)

I’ll try that later tonight. Before anything else I want to organize my icons like I had them before this restore and back that up in itunes.

Hey boxxa, if I do all that to get mywi working can I then reinstall Rock?

Got MyWi installed and working but for some weird reason it doesn’t have an icon. It’s just a white box.

edit: nvm. got it

No idea. I think rock does some DRM on packages but as long as you have it patched then install rock you should be ok.

White icon usually goes away once you launch Cydia and it loads all the debs.

the fact there is a pdf exploit for the iphone is scary lol

There is a PDF exploit on anything.

Get the popup notifier from Cydia that lets you know anytime a PDF is trying to load.

I doubt most PDF exploits allow you complete and total control over the phone. Jailbreakme.com is jail breaking the phone through the PDF exploit if you weren’t aware. Apple screwed up big on this one, and what’s worse it wasn’t even fixed in the 4.0.1 update.

For now I’m going to do what boxxa suggested and just get the stupid PDF notification fix in Cydia, but that’s a hack fix if I ever saw one.

Edit. Updated, and tested.

A lot of exploits now use mal-formed PDFs to land on your system. Doesn’t really surprise me that they’ve moved to the phones now.

Look at the number of Adobe flash/reader/pdf exploits for windows that how a good number of Windows boxes get popped with client side attacks…

The PDF exploit combined with a technique to break out of the sandbox made it possible.

And people wonder why Jobs hates Adobe so much.

hah, it’s true that adobe doesn’t have a great track-record when it comes to security

In windows Adobe installs to the system32 folder…for what reason?

Anyone tried Air Video yet?

Cliffs: Install Air Video app on iphone.
Install Air Video server on your computer.
Set up the port forwarding in your router.
Stream video files from your computer to your phone (mp4, m4v, mov, avi, wmv, asf, mpg, mpeg, mkv, 3gp, dmf, divx, flv)

I just installed it and after 30 seconds of buffering it was streaming the 1080p mkv of Avatar I have on my server to my phone over 3g. The video quality was slightly blotchy because it does an on the fly compression but it was really impressive. Far better than say the youtube quality you get over 3g. I’m curious if it looks at your connection type when doing the compression to do more or less depending if you’re on wifi or 3g.
