THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

Doesn’t explain the lack of an untethered jailbreak for iOS5 on iPhone 4… no hardware changes there.

I think they’re just waiting for iOS 5.0.1. There have been several bugs reported in iOS 5 and a patch is going to be needed. The biggest being that security flaw that lets you bypass the lockscreen password on iPad2. Similar problem on iPhone 4S in that they enable Siri on the lockscreen by default even when the lockscreen is password protected, which allows you to make calls and do all kinds of things from a “locked” phone. At least that one can be turned off from the settings, but I’d expect apple to make the default off in the next release.

The boot security on the iOS is different. Its not like a PC that has the OS installed and turns on and loads it. The actual OS image is encrypted and checked at boot so for the jailbreak to work, it needs to actually override and break the encryption on the image for it to accept bogus packages such as Cydia. The tethered one allows the boot ROM to be broken and load the image. The untethered one takes more work as they need to break into the boot rom to override and accept custom commands from the software itself.

I get it, I was just simply stating that a jailbreak for iOS5 isn’t necessarily limited because of hardware changes.
I still think they should have one out by now though.

They’re probably waiting for the next update to iOS before they release a potentially patchable hole.

They always try to avoid handing out jailbreaks that might be capable of being patched or detected, unless there is a good OS out. iOS 5.0 has a few known bugs, so it would be nice to get those patched first.

Quick question guys, I have a second gen Ipod and in my truck and car it sits horizontally but I HATE cover flow. Is there a way to get it to rotate but still display the normal menus? Both for music and everything else? I’ve googled it and found a way to turn off the rotation but I still want it to rotate. I’ve also found ways to lock apps /safari in the landscape mode but not for music.

iTether is working nicely…

Reasonable speeds for 3G.

Please tell me you got that off installous or some other hacked source and didn’t pay $15 for an app that has zero chance of ever getting updated.

Probably no untethered jailbreak anytime soon. 5.1 just got seeded to developers so I bet there will be time before we see any development in the jailbreak world.

Also, be careful with iTether. ATT and other networks are able to detect traffic originating from a tethered PC so you may get a nasty text message warning you esp with something as blatent as a native app.

My next project is going to be PublicPhoneBook which will simply load, ask the user to share phone book and post it online for anyone to see.

I don’t steal apps. I fully understand the risks.

Paying for this app is still cheaper than paying for a single month of tethering, and that would be limited to 4GB. There is no point in having unlimited data if I can’t use it as I wish. I’m not going to avoid using the data how I want, simply to avoid confrontation from the carrier, thats just plain illogical. The worst possible outcome would be my contract is terminated, and they charge me a fee. I consider that to be perfectly acceptable. I’m likely to end up terminating my contract before it expires irrespective.

No. Worst case they catch you tethering and charge you up to $500 per Gigabyte. Also, since cell phone companies have your SSN, it will end up on your credit if you fail to pay.

pwned

Like I said, I’m willing to accept the risks. It would be a bit unreasonable to think they would cancel my data plan entirely, when my device contractually requires a data plan. Any time this has occurred in the past was accidental, and corrected. It would be terribly difficult to use monumental amounts of data, with daily text data alerts, also indicating the plan data limit. I’m not concerned.

iTether does not use the native tethering built into iOS. Although its unquestionably able to be detected, it would not be in the same way that enabling native tethering would.

Want to get my g/f an iphone for Christmas. She has her own plan with verizon so I cant upgrade or change her plan. Can I do a gift card or some type of voucher to use for the phone?

You can just buy the phone. Activate it after she opens it.

You’re really getting your girl a $700 dollar Christmas present?

She’s eligible for upgrade. Unless im missing something wont it only be 199 for the upgrade?

Edit: I just want to know if I can get her a gift card or something so she can go in and upgrade herself. If not Ill go with her and pay for it. We have been together for 4 years and live with each other so she’s not some girl I’ve been dating for a few months.

Upgrades require resigning the contract which you said you are not authorized to do so you are better off getting a gift card.

Untethered jailbreak in Beta. Should be out hopefully soon.

finally. keep us updates please, is the JB for 5.1?

No response yet. Just 5.0 and 5.0.1 right now since there is no ultrasn0w for 5.1’s baseband update.
