THE **iPhone** Thread (GPS, JailBreak, Apps, Etc)

yeah it makes sense to be locked down by apple

Nothing I’ve seen that can be done with a jailbroken phone is worth risking my warranty and or support with Apple. Not saying there won’t be some cool features later on but right now it seems like a dumb thing to do.

How does jailbreaking risk your warranty? its just a patched software install. If it crashes, you can just go into boot mode and flash it back with the original firmware. Its pretty much impossible to brick the iphone which is really impressive on apples part.

Granted, the thing shits the bed and you have jailbroken software on it it might look bad but if the thing just outright dies, you have bigger issues.

OK??? I don’t know what I’m missing I guess… And I never feel locked as I’m sure I can jailbreak my handset in about 40min.

I suppose I will keep my eyes peeled for a hack that will be worth me going through the effort of jailbreaking my phone. As of now I don’t really see a good reason. There are no killer hacks that will make my life that much more convenient…

Any time you flash firmware there is a chance of bricking it. It may be a slight chance but to do it when the “big reward” is installing an nes emulator it does seem worth it. I’ll let people like boxaa work out the bugs and when a worthwhile jailbreak only app comes out then I’ll do it.

Ya you can corrupt the firmware which in this case is the OS but the iphone has DFU mode and restore mode. DFU mode is great becuase it allows you to boot right into the ROM so you can reflash whatever you need to since it does not load the OS at all and is not the same as the old restore mode which still relied on iTunes and could be interupted.

Hopefully Apple releases some update that cripples the Phones of people who did the jailbreak

they do with every release lol

I think instead of trying to understand any of this I’ll just come to you if I decide to jailbreak LOL

they can cripple the iphone by releasing an update that fixes the exploit that is used and disabling the jailbreak since it installs a new OS on the phone however, they do not brick phones for being jailbroken. its impossible.

Sounds just lik 90% of the DSS test card community before Black Sunday. “They don’t kill the card, they just disable it and then you fix it”. BOOM, dead cards.

Anyway, have fun. When they release something really amazing that requires me to jailbreak my phone, then I’ll consider it.

BTW, I’ve read that an update from Apple is coming soon to address some bugs. If you’re determined to be “that guy” who has to hack everything he owns you might want to at least wait until after the update.

DSS card cracking was awesome. 24/7 porn ftw!

Ya I know what you mean about the jailbreak. It was a more of a proof of concept thing and see what there was out there to install and how easy it was. My big one was to see if you can tether it and also if the vibrate fix that was available for the original iphone had been ported yet. I am going to flash it back tonight and wait till the update because I want the bugs fixed.

The true way of bricking it would be to corrupt the ROM but this is a huge risk becuase imagine the inconvenience if they can cause if it goes haywire. Apple also has taken a real hands off approach to jailbroken phones in the past.

Apps I’m looking for/would jailbreak for:

Video recorder/more fully featured camera
Excel
Word

ehhhh… this stupid POS

Everytime I try streaming audio today, it keeps locking up the phone, forcing me to do a hard reboot (non jailbroken 2.0)

GO APPLE!!!

Meh, I haven’t had any trouble with mine yet. The OS seems to be FAR more usable and responsive than my windows phone… FWIW

fuck, tried dumping my cookies, history and cache. Restarting safari (closing the “tabs” that were already open), hard rebooting it and still having issues

so friggin annoying  I’m about to throw this piece of shit at the wall

edit: it was working fine last night, wtf

A few new things we are seeing in this version of the software is the addition of a bunch of Core Location features that track the direction you are heading, and the speed you are traveling. Looks like we might see a turn-by-turn GPS app after all on the iPhone 3G.

Anyone have a direct link to the iphone 2.0 firmware? I am restoring my phone back to the original software and iTunes keeps timing out the download.
