Jailbreak rules
it was cool to get tethering to work and also to have some network and wireless tools on there but now I want to go back to the original and wait for the update
An intresting read on the pain in the ass time developers have with the Apple SDK rules.
Bring on the third party developers now that Installer v4 images are in the wild.
man, can’t wait until uXM comes to the iphone appstore (if it ever does).
That’s really the only reason to jailbreak for me.
really? I thought there was?
or is that with the tomtom software or whatever it’s called? Either way, it seems much easier/cost effective just getting a portable GPS unit
tomtom is gps software or standalone gps, i was told the crapphone didnt have turn by turn just a big blue dot showing your position.
According to apple there is…
There isn’t. I have one. You get the google maps directions with arrows at the top of the page. You click the arrow to advance the directions to the next leg.
It will not auto-reroute if you miss a turn, and it will not automatically update the directions when you reach a point (you have to click it).
That said, it works fine for the little bit of navigation help I need.
Being able to customize a route on your PC via google maps (where you can easily drag and drop the route to make a detour) and send it directly to the iphone via email is pretty cool too.
When I had my verizon phone, the navigator was an extra fee (personally it sucked. i used it in a few different cities on the U740 and it gave a lot of peoplems and kept trying to locate you. Also with ATT and the BlackJack2, you had to pay for the navigator too. I am happy with free maps that shows me where I am if I get lost. Never was a big turn by turn person anyways. Also, the battery with the gps running that long with the screen on for directions would kill it so I have no use for it.
They did say that there is updates for the new firmware that is coming out that will add more features to the GPS which could possibly enable turn by turn but I doubt it.
^ The battery with GPS is pretty much a moot point though. You’d be in your car where you can just plug it in.
I’m hoping they add a little more functionality to it. If TomTom ever did release their software for it that would be even better.
but would it still need to stream google maps? Or would it use d/led maps? I can see that taking up a pretty good size chunk of storage
Ya but still, I am not big on cellphone GPS units. I like how I can locate me and get directions from where I am currently to a location.
GPS is at the bottom of my list of complaints.
I love the phone but I have two big changes I wish they fixed.
More info on the lock screen. It shows only text messages and missed calls. I would really like to see any notifications such as email. (This wont happen becuase the SDK prohibits any application from modifying the lock streem)
Longer/Pulsing vibrate on texts. I never feel it.
I have a couple more but these are my only big issues with the phone.
Turn by turn is coming in 2.1
in the SDK there are tags that allow for accurate direction/speed tracking in GPS which would mean that turn by turn is on the way
Have you seen anything official or is this just speculation?
I know the thing is damn accurate when it can see the sky because I’ve used it to track myself on google maps satellite view and it’s within 5 feet.
The number of offerings on the App Store — the venue for independently produced programs that helps distinguish Apple’s smartphone from all others — hit 1,001 on Monday night.

That didn’t take long.
whoa. So besides stupid games and shit, what cool apps are worth mentioning?
voice recorder, to do list, online banking, weather bug, news feeds, streaming radio, pandora radio, VNC, sports ticker, ebay mobile, etc (all free)
A lot of them are crap… they were free before the appstore via apptap installer (jailbroken) and now they want money (for instance, a flashlight app that just displays a white screen).
but there are a bunch worth buying (hold’em poker is real good imo)
