The Longest Day at Watkins Glen -2011

Monday June 13th, 2011.
Patroon and NY Chapters of the BMWCCA invite you to a unique one day event at Watkins Glen. The Longest Day at Watkins Glen. 12 hours of track time! ( ok it is actually 11.5)
NASCAR took the 2nd day away from us ( could be an F1 driver testing a car….) and Watkins Glen helped us work out a solution. We have the track from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM that day.
From 8:00 -12:00 –Traditional HPDE for all student groups with an open track format for Advanced Solo / Instructor candidates and Instructors.
From 12:00-1:00 -Lunch break for flaggers with follow the leader touring laps for your friends and family.
1:00-5:00 –Back to the HPDE/Open Track stuff
5:00-5:30 – Dinner Break for flaggers
5:30-8:30 – Open track for Instructors and students signed off that day ( or in the Advanced solo group)

So – Instructors, Advanced Solo/open track people should see at least 4-5 hours of track time.
Cost $275 for HPDE students ( Who can pay an additional $50 for the 5:30-8:30 time if signed off that day)
Advanced Solo/Open Track/Instructor candidates - $325
Instructors—trade track time for Instruction time.

Need additional things to keep you busy? Sunday—the chapter will host some sort of wine and food thingy at a local winery
AND on Tuesday –you might be able to glimpse that F1 driver ………

NON BMW’s Welcome ( I drive a Nismo 350)

Sounds like fun. I might check this out since I’ve always wanted to do the Glen.

I have a highly modified 300zx and passed on opening day at the glen. I have no track experience. Is this event simething for me or seasoned drivers?

There will be in car and classroom instruction for all types of drivers during the HPDE format. We all start at some level and move up over time. You will be in a run group with drivers of similar experience/ability --so no pressure.

Patroon BMWCCA holds 3-5 events of this type during the year and has been doing it for over 25 years.

Event title is misleading, I come up with 4 + 4 + 3 = 11 hrs (13 hours shorter than the legendary The Longest Day and 14 hrs, 25 minutes, and 25 seconds shorter than this years The Longer Longest Day). Still sounds like a fun half day event.

You may want to check FLR’s schedule again, the June 12th date was moved:

Thanks for the heads up on the SEAD event. Darn, that is what I was planning on doing on Sunday.

No Comparison intended to any 24 hour event. Just a longer day than normal for an HPDE event at WGI.

Don’t mind him. He just likes to complain. Looks like a fun event, if it wasn’t Montreal GP weekend I’d probably come up.

is the group 1 filled or is there still room?

I am not sure what you mean by Group 1 – but registration is still open at www.patroon.motorsportreg.com --There is room available --although we could use some more instructors for the event.

The registrar is a little slow on confirming people right now, he has another event at NJMP next Monday that is taking up a lot of time.

Group 1 is the beginner group. I have done a few autocross events but have yet to get into an hpde with my work schedule last year.

We call Group 1 our Novice group. We have a good number, but are holding off on confirming more until we get more instructors. I would suggest signing up so as we have more sign up we can take in more students.

Lot of room for Advanced / Advanced Solo type students ( ie open trackers)

if more people sign up that are going to be assigned an instructor, will the club search for more instructors?

If I register for the event within the next few days or would I have to hold off more days?

We are searching for more instructors. The one day format is hurting us though with instructors ( and some students too)

I would suggest signing up – best case scenario --as we get more instructors we accept more students. Worst case --we do not get more and we have to decline you. ( you CC is not charged until you are accepted and confirmed)

I hate turning people away from an event.

my landlord is a bmwcca instructor, will zaraska. I can ask him if he’s interested if you’d like (and if he isn’t doing it already).

not sure if we’ll have our new track car sorted by then, but if so how would it work financially (my business partner and I would split seat time)?

Will has instructed with Patroon before, but does not appear to be signed up for this event. Sure–give him a shout.

As far as 2 people sharing a car, it can work if you are in 2 different run groups/ driving levels. for this event one would have to be a novice or intermediate and the other advanced or instructor.
Both people would have to pay an entry fee though, you cannot share one entry fee. ( instructors do not pay, they donate instruction time)

right.
Hm, it’s been 2 years since my last trackday and I’ve never driven fwd on the track before so I think I would want to be in intermediate. My co-driver would likely want to be in novice or intermediate as well, if the novice/intermediate split wouldn’t work this may not work out. Thanks anyway, I’ll e-mail will

We picked up some additional instructors --so if interested in a Novice, Intermediate slot–sign up soon.

You have to become a member of the bmwcca to do their events correct?

That is correct. $48 for membership. You can be a member of any chapter, it does not have to be Patroon or NY.
