LOL.

Dear senator,

:ham: on me…

I bet they haven’t heard a single thing about what is going on with gas prices yet. Nope, not in the news, not on the internet, not in TV shows, not in newspaper. Hell I bet they had no idea, not even a clue this was a concern.

Much energy being spent bitching and arguing that could be used towards finding a real solution, even if it’s finding a more personal arrangement to sort it out. And not something that can save/destroy the world.

There’s a difference between “bitching” and trying to educate. Right now people are bitching to their officials about the wrong things.

They bitch they want windfall profit taxes, which won’t do anything to lower the price since US oil companies don’t set the price, and based on the history of windfall profit taxes will likely raise prices.

They bitch they want more alternative energy research. Ok, that’s great for the supply issue that’s coming many many years down the road, but it does nothing to help $4+ gas today. It needs to be done, but the focus this year should be shorter term.

They bitch they want more pressure on OPEC to produce more oil. Again, not a supply issue.

They bitch they want gas tax holidays. There might be some trickle down benefit (trucking costs go down etc) but it won’t help much. The desperate tone it gives off could even cause investors to drive the price higher.

They bitch they want more drilling. Boosting domestic production would be a great thing, but even if we rubber stamped it today through some history making display of partisan cooperation you wouldn’t see a drop of new oil for years.

They bitch they want more refineries. Again, boosting domestic refining capacity would be a great thing. It would no doubt help with the price of gas and would insulate us from price spikes due to localized natural disasters. But it won’t help with gas prices for years while these refineries are being built.

So people need to be educated about what could make a huge difference in the cost of oil TODAY. There are two things.

  1. Get the dollar’s value up. When the world buys oil with dollars and the dollar isn’t worth much it takes a lot of them to get a barrel. The fed has admitted the dollar is a priority now. They sacrificed the dollar with the low interest rates needed to help the housing market.

  2. Address the speculation problem. The quickest way to pop the oil bubble is to change the margin requirements for oil futures contracts to match the requirements they use on stocks. We came close last week but they had to go and tie the legislation to windfall profits so it got blocked. If more people start bitching about it though you’ll see this get pushed through by itself which would give it the support of both republicans and democrats.

nice post!

:bigclap: finally someone has some sense on this topic.

What if we all just didn’t buy gas for one day to send a message?

I know you’re just joking, but if this post causes one idiot to post something serious about any form of boycott I’m going to strangle you with a gas pump hose then set your new kitchen cabinets on fire.

EDIT: With gasoline I will purchase on the boycott day.

Yes the message of we will still need the same amount of gas just on another day. If people want to make any difference at all they should try to reduce their oil usage not just gas and reduce demand overall.

EDIT-I also realize you are joking.

Has to be via text message, make sure to include all the jail bait ass who can’t drive yet too.

and filled up the next day…

no i have a question … you here all the time how they dont make money on the gas they make it from selling things from the stores they had… what if we stoped buying junk from the store… or would that just close the “mom and pop” places?

 Fair enough.

:picard:

lol

no pic card needed i just wanted to know .

It’s true that the margin on gas for a gas station is only about 2%, but they also sell a lot of it. All the crap in the store is sold at a higher margin, but that’s not their primary business.

Not buying a bag of cheetos and and a SoBe will just save you some cash, not put a small station out of business.

Wait how come we just don’t switch to ethanol???

I kitten dies every time you fill up with ethanol.

I don’t understand why the people of this country even think to look to our government to solve this problem. Howard Stern mentioned the other day (I know he’s an ass, but a good point was made); he made the statement that he hasn’t bought gas in 20+ years. He doesn’t know what it is like to worry about how much it costs to fill his tank and he is not alone. Our politicians don’t know what it is to see a growing portion of their paycheck go towards their gas tank.
People have to take this matter into their own hands. It is a consumer problem that must be addressed by consumers. Find a different way. I don’t know what the perfect solution is for everyone. My lifestyle has changed due to the cost of fuel and I’m still here. Our government has a tradition of maintaining a mostly hands-off approach to the market.

Can’t grow enough corn.

Corn is in damn near everything Americans eat. I dare you to find a packaged food that doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup or some other byproduct of corn, beef that wasn’t corn fed,

Wait. You were joking weren’t you?
