TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 15 (UPI) – A Florida legislator wants convicted drunken drivers to have a vehicular scarlet letter – bright pink license plates with numbers that begin DUI.
The plates would be issued to drivers who have restricted licenses because of DUI convictions, the Tampa Tribune reports.
“Maybe it will embarrass people and keep them from drinking and driving,” said Republican state Sen. Mike Fasano said. “Maybe they’ll think twice.”
Under Fasano’s bill, police could stop a vehicle with DUI plates without any reason.
Two states, Ohio and Michigan, now have special plates for drunken drivers. In Ohio, judges can order the tags for anyone with two or more DUI convictions, while in Michigan people with a previous conviction who are arrested for DUI are issued paper license tags while the case is before the courts. The ACLU said it would oppose the bill. But a former Sarasota County judge who made convicted drunken drivers put conspicuous bumper stickers on their cars says that arrests when down while she was doing it.
Of course. I’m all for it. It’s not like they’re branding these people for life. While they have the restricted license they have the DUI plate. Seems fair enough to me. Once you’ve paid your debt and get a normal license back the DUI plate comes off.
this is complete bullshit. You cannot support yourslef in a shit city such as Buffalo with such a horrible public transportation system. In NYC its not a problem. Here it would be a HUGE problem. Privilege my ass.
No one said they can’t have a car or a license, it’s just going to be obvious they had a DUI. What’s the big deal? Here’s an idea: don’t drink and drive, and your license plate can remain as it is. Simple. Fair.
Although, I’m not really sure what GOOD this does, other than hopefully scare people from getting a DUI. It’s probably not a very good deterrant. Imagine if you started seeing 100s of these plates. People would be like “eh, oh well, everyone else has one anyway, so who cares if I have to have one, too?” Something that used to be quite unspoken or hidden becomes the “norm.”
It’s like the stigmas of divorce, bankruptcy, and abortion. Once you start hearing them become commonplace, they lose their negative connotation. Sure they’re “desperate” acts, but I’m sure we all know a couple people who have done one (or more) of the above.
There probably isn’t a solution to DUIs that doesn’t encroach on the civil rights of the common man. I’d say, “make cars require a breath-test to start,” but you know what? I don’t drink. I shouldn’t have to wait a nanosecond longer, or have to perform any unusual act to start my car. So, what’s to stop some moron from driving his car while he’s drunk? Other than some common sense, a fear of getting caught, or hopefully his own discretion, nothing.
my brothers brilliant idea. Create a lane with huge stone barriers on both sides…this lane is only for drunk drivers. Drive at your own risk, insurance is out the window.
its public humilation and ridicule. they will get stared at no matter where they go. cops would also be aware of it just by looking at the car, and therefore would be able to pull them over due to “probable cause”.
too bad it won’t ever happen. the US has too many civl liberties, and im sure this would be a violation somehow.
they should execute people after dwi’s like they do in other countries. i bet you your ass dwi’s wouldnt occur anymore, and the ones that do…they should be killed anyways.
i think we need to have lisence plates for fat ugly chicks.
they could all start with FAT.
ill be the screener at the DMV.
i’m so pissed when i see a pony tail, and a fuzzy steering wheel cover, and i go twice the speed limit to catch up to them to see if they are cute/hot…and it turns out…its a secret ugly/fatty cruising around.
