The Trump Presidency Discussion Thread (Non-Meme version)

My issue with is is the basically passed a law that said getting murdered by a midget is illegal, but all other murder is ok. I’m cool with making murder illegal but putting such a narrow scope on it is stupid. Repeal it and if it’s really a concern pass something that actually protects us, not some nonsense Obama shoved through on his way out the door to do nothing but score media points without actually making things better.

Since “net neutrality” has been handled by others here, I’ll hit on the rest.

It’s way too soon to say the immigration policy (executive order) is a misstep or failure. We all know why the media is already judging it as a failure well before the process has played out, but objectively you can’t say it’s a “win” or “loss” yet.

I’ll give you a specific example that played out in a similar way to Trumps immigration EO. Obama issued an immigration EO designed to shield illegal immigrants from deportation. Unlike Trump’s EO, the media praised the order. Then in similar fashion to how left wing judges are blocking Trumps order, right wing judges blocked Obama’s order. At the end of the process Obama’s EO made it to the supreme court where a split caused the order to be blocked. Obama’s EO was then a failure.

We’ll see what eventually happens to Trump’s EO.

As for Trump’s budget, budgets don’t originate in the executive branch they originate in the congress, the house of representatives specifically. So it’s understood by anyone who knows the process that if a budget is proposed by the White House it’s simply a wish list. It’s not real, unless congress takes ideas from that proposed budget and actually uses them. And in this case congress has no proposed budget (hello debt ceiling) at all. So all the media hype around Trump’s “budget” being destructive, “killing Meals on Wheels”, etc. is just to play off the ignorance of the less informed.

Good example. I haven’t been following the current state of that EO. It sounded more or less like they were just giving up on it instead of bringing it to the SC. For stuff like that I certainly stick to what is being said by the courts, not the media opinion on it.

Right. I know the WH can’t initiate the budget. I see it as a way to show the public the direction that they would like to go in. That’s more what I was asking with that.

That is why the big push on Gorsuch. They want him seated before the EO makes it to the court.

Hmm. I would think the big push for Gorsuch is for a lot more than just that. And aren’t supreme court justices supposed to be unbiased?

Of course it is more than that but they want him in prior to the EO hitting. Based on his track record one could assume his ruling on it.

Even the courts are being a bit fucky with it. They’re using Trump’s words in the presidential campaign as their reasoning for blocking the EO, not the text of the EO specifically. So we’ll see how that works out for them.

Yeah for sure. If someone asks me what car I want I’m going to say Koenigsegg Regera, but I’m not going to expect to get it. Also it’s more Art of the Deal positioning by asking for 4x as much as you’re really willing to accept.

They need a tie breaker or else it falls back on the lower courts.

Logging into any of those sites with your account is voluntary. Logging into your ISP is not, unless you want to be offline completely.

Since this is a car website after all, I think of it as equivalent of the people who volunteer for that Progressive Snapshot to spy on their driving, vs. if the DMV required it as a condition to register your car.

Let’s keep in mind what the job of the media is, though. They are supposed to be an impartial source of information to shed light on things that the general public doesn’t have access to. There’s a lot of bullshit out there but there are still facts being reported. (I don’t want to go after anything in particular right now, but I think you’ll understand what I’m getting at.)

So I get where the media has lost a ton of credibility but that doesn’t mean you should discount all sources. I try to read multiple sources, left and right, and try to sift through the obvious agenda driven content to form an opinion. It’s one of the reasons I come here to ask questions despite being shit on for using the wrong words from time to time. I value the insight of members here even if it doesn’t agree with my own view. Wouldn’t only listening to Trump or the WH releases be taking an even more biased stance?

I guess you’re right, but being on Facebook allows me to see enough garbage that people post about, enough that I want to see anyways.

I just refuse to believe the media anymore. They’ve been exposed, the left has been exposed, shit the right has been exposed too.

It’s no secret that those with power will abuse it at some point.

It’s like the saying that a salesman never lies. At some point in his/her career, they’re going to tell a small lie in order to close a sale.

I guess I just realize that most politicians are corrupt and will make backdoor deals to look out for their friends and those who helped get them elected.

There’s no denying the fact that this election has created or at least exposed the media for what they are. Propaganda driving, left leaning, headline producing, race baiting…I could go on and on and most people agree with me.

I still watch the news at night, mostly because I cancelled cable and just want to catch the weather, but it really isn’t my preferred choice of boob tube watching.

First time around it was stayed due to the content of the EO, and the way it specifically ‘harmed’ certain classes of individuals with regard to due process.

Second time around, and specifically in the case the state of Hawaii brought, it was about intent, and due process.

Your ISP can’t see the vast majority of your traffic…

So based on your analogy they could see you turned your car on and off and ISPs already look at traffic stats like Netflix and others to make routing and peering decisions with other ISPs.

Ajit Pai’s take on the Online Privacy thing. Dems have slammed him super hard, but I actually like a lot of what he’s saying and doing. When you read this article, things make a lot more sense.

reddit and pornhub. looks like I’m covered.

I don’t trust Ajit Pai. His opinion and action on zero-rating concern me. I really don’t see how his actions are in the consumer’s interest even if like what they do for corporations.

Looks like by tomorrow afternoon we’ll have a full supreme court and another nail in the coffin of Harry Reid’s legacy.

So by getting rid of the filibuster, from now on the majority party can do whatever the fuck they want and there will be zero incentive to reach across the aisle for minority party buy in?
