Honest question; What are your thoughts on his tax returns? Trump said himself that he would release them and has now gone back on that completely. This comes after a petition on the white house website that, at the time of this post, has ~260,000 signatures and increasing. While it may not be a requirement, it allows citizens to determine whether or not the candidate/elected official is doing things for their own interests or for the benefit of the people. So for Trump to flat out refuse is concerning for a lot of people. This decision doesn’t exactly reflect a ‘drain the swamp’ mentality.
The tax thing was a non-issue for me when he was running and it remains a non-issue now. If they want to make it a requirement to run/be president they should have passed a law.
I guess I just can’t see this being let go if it was a democrat. For him to go back on his word seems to indicate that there is something to hide. Are you not holding him to same standard? @LZ1 - Obviously, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be reviewed in detail to determine conflicts of interest. Which as we all know has been an issue with this administration. To say that it doesn’t matter because he is now president is a dangerous mindset. I would argue that it matters more now than ever.
The excuse that most people wouldn’t know how to read them is irrelevant. If released, I’m sure someone qualified to do so would review them and communicate any findings in basic English.
In regards to him releasing them, at this point it likely won’t matter. He clearly has business interests all over the world, whether it be directly through him or through investments or interests. I think the biggest concern that people should have is that he said he would release them, and then went back on it. He seems to be doing that a lot. I wonder how many more times he will have to go back on his own words before people start to say “hmmm”.
edit: @Paulo on the same page. I should clarify - by saying it likely won’t matter, I mean it won’t change the mind of his supporters even if something were found. They would write if off as “he’s not a politician, he didn’t know better” or “he’s a smart business man” or “Hillary did worse”.
Go look at how much money is spent on lobbying? or for that matter where did the Clinton foundation get all its money?
You don’t need Trumps taxes to find out what businesses he owns or has interests in.
Also if you want his tax returns you probably want everyone in his cabinets along with the other 4000 something jobs he gets to appoint.
I agree with @JayS if everyone wants it get a law passed and require. My guess is it just adds some level of complexity that is open to analysis by a number of tax experts with views on both sides of the spectrum. I’m sure FoxNews can get someone saying these tax returns are great and MSNBC can find someone to say the exact opposite.
So despite Trump being the ‘drain the swamp’ candidate who promised to get corruption out of DC, he now gets the pass to do it because it’s the norm? What is it going to take for you to start questioning whether or not Trump can do anything he promised at all? Why doesn’t he get a critical eye?
I’m pretty sure the original intent was him releasing them when they were not under audit during the campaign/election cycle at this point he won the election and it’s irrelevant since the vote is over.
Go start a change.org petition to require tax returns prior to running for office? Be the change!
This is the same type of thing with the Obama birth certificate you will get each side of the issue polarized on some issue this isn’t important.
So let’s add another topic while were on Trump lies.
While inconsequential, the crowd size at the inauguration was smaller than previous inaugurations. Not a big deal especially when you consider that both candidates were fairly unpopular. However, the administration decided to make the false claim that it was biggest turnout ever and had Sean Spicer use his first ‘press conference’ to just rant at the media for 5 minutes before walking away from the podium. What in the actual fuck? Why lie? Why bother creating an issue of it?
This was even covered by Fox News where Chris Wallace had the discussion with WH chief of staff Priebus asking why they sent Spicer out to lie about it.
i guess that and the tax thing would be indicators of dishonesty or something. to be honest, i believe we are all bred to accept and expect a level of dishonesty in our politicians.
the tax thing actually doesnt bother me. I am sure it would be incriminating but i don’t blame anyone who loopholes the shit out of their taxes. I also do not believe that someone of his profile and wealth could systematically lie about their taxes and i also do not believe that the majority of the electorate would have understood the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion. certainly not in this political climate.
with regard to the media, they are really fighting an uphill battle and i dont blame them for the occasional mistake in their management of it, the inauguration numbers being one such error, intentional or not.
what is happening to trump in the media is why China doesnt allow it. It is manufacturing dissent which will impede political progress and create animosity all levels of the US. You could argue that this is the way it should be for the media to keep them honest but it is idealogy driven, not honesty driven. i guess if you were on the hard-left though it would be an important tool for agenda-driving.
It is definitely a slippery slope but CNN can’t yell “fire” in a crowded theater either.
I am not sure what the answer is, maybe fines or short term shutdowns of CNN type media. I really don’t know.
The free market would say boycott their advertisers I guess.
