BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - An NFTA officer is accused of skimming items taken from travelers at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
When you give up items at the checkpoint, the last thing you would imagine is that they would wind up in the home of a Transit Police Officer. NFTA police are investigating one of their own.
It can get personal when you’re going through the security check point at the airport, and you suddenly have to surrender something in your bag.
TSA Customer Service Manager Brett O’Neil said, “A little bit perturbed, especially when they forget, and you have to take it away. That’s when they get most perturbed.”
The items taken away are stored by the TSA, but then turned over the Transit Police, which now takes them to a recycling facility. But more than three years ago, when they were taken to the dumpster, a Transit Police Officer is now accused of taking them home.
NFTA spokesman Douglas Hartmayer said, “There were some items that this officer allegedly misappropriated and brought from the airport to his home, and was keeping them there.”
Sources say there is no proof he profited from taking home the confiscated material.
Janet Koch said, “They took my nail file and nail clippers out of my purse.”
Koch, who had these items confiscated last fall, thinks the officer should be taught a lesson.
“Well, he ought to know better. He ought to have some punishment,” said Koch.
Her grandson, Adam, said, “It’s just unethical behavior, and I think it shows a complete lack of respect for people’s property and people’s security, and the measures that were enacted.”
The tip came from a family member who called the NFTA to get the scissors, clippers, and whatever else out of the house. The officer has been suspended for 10 days without pay.

Yuck, why would you want someones used nail clippers.

that is weird, and gross.

but who cares. shit was getting thrown out anyway.

Would that lady be “Koch” blocking him from stealing stuff?

Once you put something in the garbage isn’t that considered public property?

I thought garage picking was illegal though?

I guess its just the point. The worse part of this story is that his own family reported him to the authorites.

lol,nail clippers.

I would much rather have the security guy keep the swiss army knife I forgot to take off my keychain than have to throw it away. Granted you can’t let that be policy because then they have a private motive to take your shit and there would be a huge conflict of interest regarding private property, but I’d rather my stuff not literally go to waste. Give him a slap on the wrist and send him back to work.

This whole policy just seems so wasteful. Would it really require that much storage space to keep the shit for say 30 days and let people get it back when they get home? Or like give them the option to pay a couple dollar storage fee for it to be retained?

I’ve seen airports that have FedEx boxes where you can put your knife in a bag and mail it home. Only thing is the shipping is like $10.

by the time you got back from your trip and got home, and then remembered you have confiscated items at the airport would you really go back for them. I am imagining hygiene items that are inexpensive for some reason. It has always been frustrating to me that I have a habit of buying a drink then going through security with my often unopened 20oz soda beverage just to be informed it must be discarded and i will have to buy another one on the other side of the ropes.

It all depends. When we just went away my friend lost a $60 bottle of cologne because he forgot and put it in his carry on.
