Tial WG Pistons: Race vs Pump gas

So Tial sells 2 types of WG pistons for their 38mm valves. I’m not exactly sure why, but one does not like leaded fuel while the other one is ok with it. I recently bought the Race piston while my car was torn apart and went to replace it and found this…

Stock vs Race piston:

I suppose this could DEFINITELY be the reason for some of my inconsistent boost issues, but does anyone know exactly WHY the stock piston does not like leaded fuels? Why not make one that stands up to both fuels?

Secondly, can you use the Race piston on regular unleaded 93? – just making sure.

Yes you can use the race unit with unleaded fuel.

The Tial 38 is their budget option. The Tial 44’s are all leaded fuel safe.

any idea why the “stock” piston is not safe w/leaded? perhaps causing it to fail like mine did?

its not usually the piston, isnt the the seals?

Chemical reaction from the exhaust gases and heat. 347ss stands up to the waste by products of TEL fuels.

hmmm interesting Never thought that leaded fuel would have an effect on 38mm WG’s usually only coats the cat and restricts it. Good to know though:meh:

Update: The Tial website hasn’t been updated to reflect this, but we just ordered some Tial 38’s and they assured us they’re all leaded fuel safe now. If you’re going to get one, make sure it hasn’t been sitting on the shelf somewhere as there’s still going to be tons of non lead safe ones floating around.
