Time for a new modem? (Time Warner)

Your paying for 10x1, where do you get 100?

Your bill is high because networks want a 300% raise in their contracts, I don’t know about you or me, but I sure as shit don’t see a 300% yearly or even in 5 years raise.

Also, to the other guy, do not buy your own d3 modem.

Ubee is juuuuuuuuuunk, and I would setup the modem as a bridge into my own wireless N router If I went that route.

Why don’t you buy your own linksys modem and stop paying money each bill to lease the modem… I believe Time Warner still charges a little fee to use their hardware.

That was the general plan that I asked about in the first post.

http://buffalo.craigslist.org/sys/2146793217.html

I ended up snagging one for $15 but I believe I had this guy down to $25 before I found the cheaper price one. Give bargaining a shot. It’s $3 per month to lease a cable modem…even if you get him to $30 this thing will pay for itself in 10 months.
You just call TW and tell them to switch the modem over and supply the new modems mac address. It took about 5 minutes.

Edit—
LZ…you still have yours for sale? I just couldn’t wait and had to get my Ubee turd replaced ASAP.

If LZ did sell his I will hit that guy on on Craigslist otherwise I would buy his. I had saw his thread and figured you bought it, so I didn’t even think to ask.

I have a surfbord docsis 2 modem I can sell you

Rockin’

Sent you a pm about that.

So, I came home today to find no sync on my cable modem, after a couple of power cycles, getting nothing.

Call into support, cable gets sync while he is on the phone, I get like 2 pages to load and it loses sync again.
Tech said no outages in the area, everything should be fine, couldn’t access my modem to see if it was ok though.
Scheduled appointment for tomorrow 2-4pm.
Also, talked to the tech and said I would go exchange the modem over at the maple store and see if maybe the modem just died or whatever.

Switch the modem over no problem, Ubee junk, but whatever. Hook it all up, gets sync, run a couple of speed tests, much better btw, and then in like 2 minutes cable loses sync again.
Wait a bit, no sync, reset the modem.
Gets sync again.
Works for about 5 more minutes, try out a youtube vide in the time, etc.
Loses sync again, without resetting, it picks sync up again.

Figure I will just let it sit, had to go eat dinner, so it was there for about 30 minutes, with no data.

Come back, modem in sync, lets fire up a game see if its ok now.
Dies after 10 minutes.
Call Tech again.
Modem regains sync while on the phone, advised the tech that I swapped modems and now it keeps dropping sync. Says they can’t do anything or test anything to tell what is going on. Says I need to just have the tech come out tomorrow and they will fix the problem.

I even removed a splitter (2way) to help out the signal strength.
Here are the stats on the modem right now.

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 3
Downstream Frequency : 717000000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM256
Downstream Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps32Increment4
Downstream Receive Power Level : -2.3 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 38.3 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 7
Upstream Frequency : 32000000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 53.3 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 4

Looks like without the splitter I am down from 55 to 53 on transmit power and receive power went from -8 to -2, which I think is better?

From the modem logs, this was the latest loss of sync.
Don’t know enough about the messages, since I couldn’t see logs to compare them from when I had my old modem.

Lasted about an hour this time before losing sync. Going to see what happens when I try to get the best signal that I can without re-arranging my entire house.

Removed the 4 way I was on and went to a two way back in. So mainline comes in, gets split with the 2 way, one goes to the modem one is going to the tv.
New readings on the modem

Gained about what I would expect from going from a 4 way 7.5db splitter down to a 3.5db splitter for levels.

Everytime it switches downstream channels, there is a like 1-2 seconds where Internet traffic completely stops.

Here is a screenshot of it happening during a download and listening to streaming music, you can see the two dips down to 0. Streaming music buffer would drop and it would stop for a sec while it rebuffered.

You should be fine with +1/38/50tx, I suspect you are having a BER issue, which cannot be seen without a meter, or a TX issue, which you can see if you keep refreshing that diag screen and see your TX fluctuate .5 to 3db every few minutes.

If you are in amherst, (14221, 14226, 14228, 14051) you need to be on the first splitter, it should be either a 2way or a 3way and the modem on the 3.5 leg. Amherst is a poorly designed area, signal is not what it should be.

Ask the tech tomorrow to swap out the modem to a sb, and if he could show you the docsis test on his meter, the BER should be 1.0e-9 PRE and POST.

You could also pull up the diag on your digital box (hold info and vol+) and go find a ch on 747mhz and 585mhz, if you are getting CORR or UNCORR bytes you have a BER issue.

Well, after the move to just a single splitter (2way both 3.5db) from above I have not lost sync again.

Transmit power has risen from mid 49 and is now sitting at about 51.3db since I did that a few hours ago, will check again tomorrow morning.

I am in 14120, just inside Niagara county, possibly similar to Amherst in setup, other side of my street is Lockport Zip code.

When I was losing sync I was above 53 on transmit and being able to stay online now I was able to look around and these Ubee modems appear to really start getting picky with that. Which seems to match my observations so far.

Thanks for the info Jabbu!

I’m not familiar with niagara, however a overnight 2db swing in your transmit is a problem, most likely the cable from your house to the pole has dmg, or the LE/Amp, which will need an engineer to work on the next day. The tech, if good, should see and diag where the problem is within 15min.

lol it definitely depends on the tech

Canceled the tech appointment for now.

I redid some wiring down stairs for the cable, putting the modem down near the mainline split. These are the new levels and going to see how that works.

I am also picking up LZ’s surfboard modem tomorrow, so that should pretty much resolve any issue I was seeing. Unless the transmit power starts varying a lot again, then I will get a line tech out here.

TX level is better, best I was seeing before was like 49.6, and the down stream is up a lot.

RF MAC Interface CableMaclayer 52.5 dBmv
RF Downstream Interface 1 Downstream 717 MHz 39.5 dBmv -1.7 dBmv
RF Upstream Interface 1 Upstream 26 MHz
RF Downstream Interface 2 Downstream 705 MHz 39.6 dBmv -1.7 dBmv
RF Downstream Interface 3 Downstream 711 MHz 39.4 dBmv -1.6 dBmv

Mine isn’t perfect so im told…but I don’t know that much about RF and don’t want to

last time a tech came out he said there was a problem between the two poles outside (this guy did a lot more moving around then I had with other guys), said they would be checking into it, last I heard about it, but I eventually ended up with splitters like you describe through my own trouble shooting. Tried to isolate the modem best I could. Home depot has good ones for a lot cheaper than Radioshack. Just a problem with digital cable once in awhile dropping channels but very rare now. I’m in 14226

Radio shack splitters are horrid, think you could make a better one with hanger wire and a ferris ring around the wires.

I am have errands for the rest of the day, so won’t really know if this is working till later tonight, but just from looking at the values I am getting I think this should fix my problem.

In reality if you were -2.3 and 53.3 in the beginning, the CMTS was helping you out quite a bit, your actual transmit was 57.2. The CMTS is where that transmit level is talking to, it can help and lower your transmit if your modem is having a hard time talking to it. Think of that as a band-aid.

You gained 8.2db on the receive, which if the cmts was not helping you out, you should have gained 8.2db on the transmit (45.1tx would be your transmit now if cmts didn’t help).

RF is easy LZ, there is no real perfect signal level. +20 is just as bad as -20, 0 is your optimal level.

For modems

+5 to -5 is great
+10 -10 is good
+13 -13 is working, beyond that your are going to have problems.

SNR
<36 best
<33 good

30-32 problems
>29 lucky to be working

TX
+35 to +45 great
+45 +50 good
+50 +55 ok/working
+56 problems

Radioshack is junk, it might as well be a dollar store splitter, anything GOLD is crap.

Dek, reconfiguring splitters is a fix, but not permanent. Something created a signal issue and will continue to. Digital is great, it can cover up a lot of problems analog could never hide, it will work until it cannot. When its right on the border, it will work interment since we flux just enough signal with night vs day or warm vs cold. In the summer when it rains i think the problem will return for you.

according to my modems page my signal to noise ratio is 37, but signal is 1. This have been a very informational topic for me. I have a surfboard 5100…which actually is pretty old now that I think of it.

Frequency 711000000 Hz Locked

I know that basic stuff they were explaining node balancing and other BS…

I have to deal with QPSK/DNCS/Multicast/GQAM bs all the time and it ends up spilling over into the RF world
