I’ve got a pretty bad oil leak either from the rear main or the oil pan on my race car. I have a race coming up at the end of the month. I’d like to address this problem, but I think it’d be less of a PITA to remove the engine to fix the leaks. While I’m in there, I’ll be adding a crank scraper and doing the timing belt. How long will this take me? Do I have time to pull the motor, fix the leaks, replace the motor, all before May 27th?
If you have all the parts you can do it in a weekend…
Greg, as long as the exhaust comes apart. Just disconnect the tie rods/steering u joint and drop everything straight out the bottom.
Give me a call if you get stuck on something and I can help you on the phone. (Sadly I have no time to come over).
Go out the bottom? So lift the car up over the engine and front suspension?
I have all the parts I need, I also have a spare engine I got from Mike as a back-up in case I ever toast this low mileage one.
Yeah, then you don’t have to go out at a crazy angle or worry about the annoying intake manifold. It’ll all go straight out the bottom still on the crossmemeber, just like in the 944’s. Just have to disconnect either the steering from the knuckles, or the control arms/shocks from the body. Your choice. Then all you need to do is pull the wiring harness through and set it on the engine, disconnect fuel, front sway, exhaust, guibo, shifter (from body you can leave it on the trans), remove the exhaust, and cooling system.
Do you lift the body over the engine/tranny/suspension with a hoist at that point?
I’ve got less than 2 weeks before NJMP!
A tall set of jack stands and a 1000lb mover’s dolly should do the trick. If you need to borrow some just let me know.
if you need a hand to muscle it out I’m just down the street and I’ll be happy to assist if I can.
I might take you up on that. I’ll need to get this thing in and out before the end of the month and the days I have to work on it are limited.
Spent about 2-2.5 hours last night working on the car. God, what an oily mess down there. I think I’m about 5 bolts from trying to pop this thing out. I’d like to follow Mike’s method of dropping the motor out the bottom, but I’m afraid I’ll have to follow another lead and pull both the tranny and motor out the top. Back at it tonight, hopefully the motor is sitting on the stand and the seals are getting replaced by the end of the night. I have less than a week to put a motor back into this thing. If I don’t get the leaks fixed in time, my other motor, the higher mileage one, will go in…
Looks like the tranny was the problem! Clutch was shot too, that was lucky to find that. Now I’ve gotta run the backup motor since I’m running out of time…
