…okay, so not exactly but here’s some racing from this weekend.
My car is down (burned up a hub at Sears Point and it’s takin’ forever to get parts) so I borrowed cars both days.
Saturday:
My best ‘official’ run: http://www.movedigital.com/go/jimmyz808/21905/TJ-Run.wmv
Even with the +1 it was TTOD after 4 of 6 groups. In the 5th/6th group a few of the small but high-HP prepared cars got under my time. I believe I was still top 5, and easily the fastest street driven car. No vid of the 70.02 clean Fun Run.
FWIW the car is a ~40k mile '02 Z06. Bone stock/original suspension, brakes, and alignment. We ran on my 315/35-17 & 335/35-17 Kuhmo 710s. The car does have heads/cam and most of the bolt-ons (though still running the stock Ti exhaust like my own car does) and does ~470RWHP. I didn’t get to use the power too much… hell I didn’t even bother shifting back into 1st ever.
This car is a '02 “base-model” Corvette. Basically stock + Hawk HPS front pads, C5 Z06 sway bars, and a cat-back. I ended up around 6th or so TTOD. I’m pretty sure I was still the fastest “street” car though there was a damn fast boosted Miata that might have edged me.
Holy crap was that a tight finish on the saturday course. Its nice to borrow rides though, I did that all last year while my car was down hehe. Nice driving though, what class were you in SM2?
So anyway, I actually ran in OSP with that sanctioning body this year. I only did that because I used a LS1/T56 swapped '93 RX7 earlier in the year that wasn’t SM2 legal. My car, the yellow Z06 and the black non-Z06 'vette that I also used this year could all run SM2 though.
As for the course on Sat the whole last 20-30 seconds was tight. I’m sure you noticed in the far back corner I’m basically doing a bunch of switch-backs. It was actually 4 pin-cone turns which (when viewed from above) roughly made a “B” shape. You can see the two big circles earlier in the course. When you viewed the course-map it sort of said “BOO.” Hardy har har. The very last hair-pin on Saturday was very tight… it went from a 60’ wide shoot into a 20’ shoot.
On Sunday that was opening up, along with a few other sections that just flowed better. All-in-all I ran ~4 seconds faster on Sunday than Saturday in a car that is about 150RWHP down (320ish vs. 470ish). Of course, HP isn’t the key element in AutoX anyway.
Just watched some of the sunday vids. I was gonna make a comment about you driving with “happy hands”, then I realized your in a corvette its kinda needed lol. I’m amazed at the amount of cones you guys use, seems like everything is walled off, or maybe its just me. I still havn’t driven a C5 yet, which is the vette I really want to drive. I drove a C4 and just recent got to take out a bone stock C6. The C6 was actaully a very underwelming experience for the sheer fact the stock tires didn’t do a damn thing for that car. But that aside the car seemed pretty damn good.
Yeah, that particular sanctioning body uses a million cones. Not really sure why… it’s just their style.
I try not to have such happy hands… but a lot of the parts of that course were just insanely tight for a C5 (especially one with tires sticking an extra .5-1" out from the fenders).
I agree about the stock tires on a C6 (or a C5 non-Z06 for that matter). The run-flats are GARBAGE. They really don’t do the car justice. I used a base-model C6 with the new A6 earlier this year. It had the base suspension, though with C6 Z06 sway bars and shocks. When we used it on my race tires it was pretty impressive for such a plush riding car. The power was a bit underwhelming coming through the A6 though.
If you ever get a chance try a C5 Z06 that is properly setup for SS class. You’re looking at basically a stock car + front sway bar, shocks and tires. They are simply amazing.
