Tool organization idea?

I own a craftsman mechanics toolset that is stored in a box similar to this:

The problem is EVERY TIME I open the box, the top part which holds the smaller sockets and extensions, as well as the wrenches, comes undone as I am opening it and the tools go everywhere. I’ve tried fixing the latch, using a bungee cord to hold it in place, etc. and each time I carry the box around and open it, the tools scatter about the box. It pisses me off because I am the type of person who is OCD about neatness when he works, and having all of my tools scattered about on the bottom of the box infuriates me even more than the part that I am usually trying to repair/fix/replace.

My question is, does anybody know of something that I can (neatly) store all of those tools in, carry around, and then open it up and have them exactly as I left it, all nice and organized? I realize I could just toss them in my 3 drawer tool box, but then I have the same problem as before with the sockets and misc. tools scattered all over the place.

Any help would be appresheated

use tool box and keep it organized

Toolbox w/each drawer foamed and shadowed for each tool. Things like wrench holders and socket racks can help too.

Would be a good start.

I’m mainly worried about the sockets. If I just put them in the drawers, they will obviously scatter about when I move the box.

Vlad that’s the exact box I have. ha

So what are those plastic things, just pieces that the sockets attach to? My dad has those but I didn’t know Sears even sold such a thing.

Yeah it’s a rail with sliders to which sockets attach to, and you can keep them in a stacked order. They are often sold on them to begin with.

They will still typically move around the toolbox, but they will move as a unit instead of scattering.

I use them in my garage box and it works out rather well.

It’s very hard to keep tools in a specific spot inside the toolbox unless you have foam cutouts or plastic premade trays, but its easy and cheap to keep them grouped inside the box, just as those allen wrenches you posted in the first picture, and the socket rails.

The allen keys have a bag in which they are stored, so that’s no problem.

I’m not worried about them sliding around as a unit, my issue was that all of the sockets would move about in the drawer and I would have to nitpick through all of them to find the correct size. If they’re on that rack then I can just pick it up and look at the # (they are laser etched) on them and go to town.

I’ll have to hit up Sears sometime this week and see what they have. I’ve also seen those plastic precut boxes but I don’t know how good those are, or how much they cost.

the rails are available at harbor freight, any auto parts store, sears, snap-on catalog, etc. I have a set and they are very helpful.

Good shit guys. Reps have been distributed accordingly. :thumbup

I believe this is one of the rare instances where this forum has actually come through and legitimately helped a member with a question/problem that they have had. ha

The precut boxes typically suck.

They are flimsy.

They are precut for a certain (typically rather slim) walled sockets, and if you get a set that has a thicker wall (higher quality in some instances) they won’t fit or will be very hard to go into slots.

They don’t fit well in toolboxes either.

So far the best ones I’ve used were these from GearWrench/Craftsman

Anyone want to take a ride to Sears right now? We can shotgun beers in the parking lot, post about it, and then forward the topic to Shady. :lol
