Tranny grinding 5th to 6th

Hey, my dad just told me his corvette is grinding from 5th into 6th. He already called a shop i dont know which one for an estimate. They said $1500 for repair. He didn’t tell me exactly what they said was wrong. Anybody have some insight or a shop for repairs?
Thanks

Needs new syncros

Anybody have suggestions on shops?

New syncro’s or 5th/6th gears depending on how bad the syncro teeth on the gears are screwed up. That’s not a bad price for a rebuild either; going to cost me more than that for my t-56 build; but I’m upgrading along with rebuilding it.

This saying always seems to come from people who have never rebuilt a tranny. It drives me fucking nuts…

97FormulaWS-6: Finally someone who knows what the fuck he’s talking about. Yes, I whole-heartedly agree. If the “syncros” are bad, odds are you’ll need a new gear a long with a new syncro sleeve as well as it’s probably all chewed up as well.

I’ve rebuilt T5 trannys for my Mustang before that had the same symptoms of grinding into gear. All I ever had to replace was the synchros…never had to touch a gear…

What I get sick of is the comment “odds are you’ll need…” by someone who hasn’t even seen or driven the vehicle in question, yet knows the solution to the problem.

odds are I’m usually right.

Good thing I never had you diagnose my trans when I was having a similar issue…you’re winning percentage would have went down.

Well…

Seeing my T-56 is in my basement on my workbench COMPLETELY torn apart, and I have to replace the 5/6 gears due to the syncro teeth on the gear being worn and chipped… there’s experience for ya…

I’ve also got to replace the 2nd and 3rd gears as well as a complete rebuild; which is also including bronse shift fork pads, steel 3-4 Fork, Viper Mainshaft, Carbon Syncro rings, and a COMPLETE Cryo treatment of everything inside.

My point is that not all trannys are the same. While it’s possible this case may be similar to yours…it could very easily be the same as mine. My other point came from when people give explanations with a certain tone or I’m right you’re wrong, more or less, and guaranteeing their solution is the right one. You, however, didn’t do this…so that’s all I got to say.

Your trans sounds like it is getting some good parts in it, are you getting parts cryoed locally?

My t-56 is almost identical to the one in his vette, they are almost identical internals in a different case.

As for the Cryo, it’s being done down south, I forgot the company that I’m sending my parts too off the top of my head.

vette trans are a little different. vettes have a 5 syncro setup as opposed to 4 in the fbodies.the major upgrade in the fbods is to go with the vette packs.
good luck everthing works out.

they do great work.

LX, obviously yeah, there is a chance that the gears will be ok. However, from experience I’ve yet to see one tranny where the gears didn’t need to be replaced as well. I’m sure a couple of them could have gotten away without doing the gears. But I’ve always opted to get it done right on the first try so it doesn’t have to be done again. And as for the syncro sleeve, they almost ALWAYS look worse than the damn syncros themselves from MY experiences.
