Hey guys, I got a car 6 months ago and I’d like to transfer the title to my girlfriend, for insurance reasons, since she drives it primarily and she can’t join my insurance plan. What’s the best way to go about doing this, paperwork-wise?
It’s a Legacy GT, worth about 8k or so fair market value.

You can have her register the car in her name but the title still in yours
I’m fine with transferring the title to her since it’s her car, I’m just not sure how to do it as far as taxes are concerned as I’ve never done this before. I’ve been told to either gift it or sell it for a dollar to her but I just wanted some input from other people who have transferred a title like this.

if you’re not related the minimum sale price in NYS is $10. but if it books for $8000, then you have to fill out an additional form stating WHY it’s been sold for so much below fair market value. “Gift” also only works if you’re related. You can go in and ask at the information desk if it’s acceptable to “gift” a vehicle to your girlfriend…there’s a small chance they will let you. Otherwise come up with some BS “trade” that you can write down she gave you in exchange for the car…just make it a non-motor vehicle trade item lol.

Sounds like it would be cheaper to hold the title in your name and reg/insure in her name. Besides the cost, when the relationshit hits the fan, do you really want her to walk with your car?
Just write a reciept for 1000$, they ask why it’s so cheap its your gf, no one can tell you how much to sell a car for, jesus christ you assholes!

Don’t make her pay taxes on something you already paid taxes on. Like I said in another thread it’s bull shit how much money is made on cars and trucks from nys fucking taxes. Just wright a recipt for a low amount under $500 and send your gf to the DMV they won’t question her and if they do tell her to say “my bf sold it to me for xxx amount on the recipt”
