that and there is no tool for these cars to "make " them shift . if the t.c.m was bad the chech ebg light would be on and codes stored in it and the trans wouldnt stick in third gear . my opinion is that the trans is fried and and stuck in third due to the trq conv is fucked and wont allow it to go down any other gear due to pressure loss

Yeah Stock auto W4A33 trans is weak but with some supporting mods like the installation of a shift kit or modified valve body and the addition of an upgraded end clutch kit you can make them worthy and most likely cheaper then a Shep built manual unit. Auto’s are not my cup of tea but if you look at a lot of turbo drag cars now they use automatics.
its not the internals that are weak , its the small channels the fluid has to go thru that shortens there life span . the hard parts are fine for moderate abuse . ya need to increase the flow of fluid in these
