LOOK OUT ISLANDERS
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a regional tsunami warning for Tonga, Fiji, Niue, the Kermadecs, American Samoa, Samoa and Wallis-Fatuna.
The quake’s epicenter was about 213 kilometers (132 miles) south-southeast of Nuku’alofa, Tonga. It struck at 6:17 a.m. local time (6:17 p.m. GMT).
The warning center said in a statement. “Some coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents lasting up to several hours.”
:ohnoes: I guess I won’t be going back to the resort I spent my honeymoon at. It was a hut on the beach in Fiji only a couple of feet above sea level.
as long as its not in the dominican. ill be there in 20 hours or so.
so would this of hit by now?
The musical
This would be taking “too soon” to a new level, seeing it hasn’t even hit yet lmao.
Wow, didn’t even hear about this.
When is it supposed to hit?
edit- after reading the rest of that article, it sounds like it’s a tsunami watch and not a warning.
“It is not known that a tsunami was generated,” the center said. “An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami,” it added.
sweet
where is p. swayze and keanu reeves when you need them to surf the big one?
I think a tsunami is created by vertical shifts of the plates… IE Plate 1 moves up three feet where plate 2 stays stationary… making a small wall of water… that the ocean corrects and trys to level itself ASAP, all that pressure of the ocean behind the wall makes a pretty awesome show.
Lateral movements though… I don’t believe it will cause any problems
LOL the waves are like 3 feet high lol The Big waves come from landslides or storm surge from hurricanes
Speaking of which… this is pretty sweet!
http://www.extremescience.com/BiggestWave.htm
When the stuff went “kersploosh” into the water it created a massive wave that washed 500m high over the headland in the right side of the above picture.
Unfortunately, one of the boats was close to shore and the huge waves overtook it killing the two people on board. Amazingly, the other two boats “rode” the tidal waves as they washed from the source of the landslide and resonated around the bay, like water sloshing in a wash basin.
Imagine riding a 500m wave lol!
Earthquakes can be both lateral and vertical shifts of the plates. Also, blasts from volcanoes can cause tsunamis, so they’re pretty unpredictable.
I would think that if a tsunami happened, we’d have heard of it by now.
how long would it take for a wave to hit land from the distance they gave? i know it depends more on the wave and the size of the earthquake
I think it said something about tsunami’s can hit like 600mph…
soo… yea… less than an hour for most places
thats what i was thinking, when i read that it hit at 6:17am locally i would have guessed the worst would have been long gone by now with the waves, maybe not so much flooding yet if it was bad, i dont know how long that would take to recede
