what kind of nightmare am i looking at turboing a carburated smallblock
how much do u know about carb’s
its not that bad actually but if u know nothing about carbs at all u would prolly be better off with fuel injection and something like a megasquirt,bs3,fast etc
I know my old grand prix had a quadrajunk, and i had no luck with it… other than that i have messed with small engine stuff forever but its a “tad” different
the best advice i could give you would be to check out another set of forums they have an awsome amount of information when it comes to blow threw carb setups
we allowed to post links to other forums here?
something to think about, EFI 24x sells a converstion to run a SBC off a LS1 computer
visit THETURBOFORUMS.com they have alot of info there especially with carbs
visit the turboforums. as quik said they have write ups for setting a carb up for blow thru
theturboforums are deff the best resource for turbocharging with a carb setup
carb you’d have to send one out to one of the big name carb manufacturers to have it worked over for a blow thru setup.
Depending on your power goals, lsx based controlled sbc is not a bad option and the kits available make it easy. You can go the other way and do the TPI based efi like i have and still work fine. Not all that pricey
I know shit about carbs, but I see everyone using carbs from pro-systems, CSU and C&S… those are the big 3 i know of.
Everything else about the turbo system is pretty easy, just limited by how much space you have in your engine bay. Fabrication skils come in handy
thanks guys to the turboforums i will go… i get the turbo stuff i built the 385 hp delsol that turbob16 has now, he has rebuilt it since. its the forcing air into the carb thing i dont get. as for space there is a ton in the engine bay, i am more concerned with the space in my garage… lets just say this will most likely be one of the oldest vehicles on pittspeed if i get it. the turbo is more just for the wow factor
one thing i dont like about carb setups is they are a SET boost level. Since youre setting up fuel for one givien AFR based on boost. what is nice is you dont need an intercooler
not exactly true u can setup the carb and increase boost and afrs should stay the same upto a point, the carb still metters air the same way it would if it wasnt under boost
point im saying you cant have a swing in psi levels. say you wanted low boost of 9 psi and high boost of 20… where as in EFI you can do this easily
i wasnt refering to few psi difference
There are many people with turbo’d carb setups in the Pontiac crowd, since there is no reasonably priced, bolt on EFI setups available for a Pontiac motor (except for the recent intro of Edelbrock’s $4500 system - still not really affordable). There are a few 8 & 9 second street cars & several 11 second DD’s using a blow thru turbo setups.
Travis, the Qjet is a hell of a carb & there are many that have very good success with it - myself included (I was never a Holley fan). Most don’t like it because they don’t understand it. It is more street friendly than a Holley. That being said, your probably better off with a Holley or a Demon for a blow thru application. There were some OEM Blow thru Qjet applications (early GN, Turbo 301 T/A, etc).
I personally think that car needs a Blow thru setup. EFI just wouldn’t fit the vibe of the car.

I’d still intercool it, depending on the boost and power levels. I dont see fuel cooling off the intake charge that much.
alot of the carb guys swear by the fuel cools it enough and they hate the restriction of intercoolers, im with you tho i would but a cooler on it. possibly make a watercooled carb’d spacer
I’d just run a plate kit and meth inject it or small 50 shot nitrous to give it some kick
turbobuick.com has a section called “before black” its dedicated to the turbo regals before SFI was added…
From what I remember readign about the old turbo regals was they were no where near as quick as the SFI versions. Do not know if the regals were intercooled or not or if the injected cars got better heads/cam or whatnot. I do believe the injected cars were much faster on stock turbos with some more boost than stock than the turbo regals that were not injected.
My old Turbo regal just had a 4barrel Carb with a hat on top
